Will my child have homework? Yes, you can expect homework 3-4 times a week from Math and ELA. Sometimes it will be from the book, sometimes it will be on google classroom, or it could be a worksheet or project. We try not to give homework on Fridays. All assignments can be redone for a higher grade. Google classroom assignments are generally editable, meaning students can redo them until the receive the grade they desire. It is about the learning, not the completion.
Why does my child's grade look different than I remember? We use standard's-based grading as well as percentages. Therefore, your child could be doing well in many areas and still struggle with a standard.
Is my child expected to work with all students? The simple answer is Yes. We do try to take student's feelings into consideration, but in this classroom we are a team. We support each other and we work with each other.
Can my child make up missing work? Yes and no. It is school policy if your child is gone one day they have one day to make up work. If your child simply did not complete the work or forgot it at home, they can turn in the assignment until the "expiration date" with a penalty.
What is an "expiration date" on assignments? Assignments can be turned in late with the possibility of a penalty. However once a test or an assessment is given on that topic, assignments are no longer accepted because they were practice for the test.
What if my child does not have access to a computer at home and you have given a google classroom assignment? There are a couple ways to remedy this situation. If your child has a phone with internet, they can reach the assignment from these calendars or from google classroom on their phone. Also, we have tutoring after school. Many teachers allow students to work on missing assignments during advisory or if they complete work in their class. If these solutions do not work for your child they can talk to us and we will help you find a solution for this problem..
Will you call me if my child is missing an assignment? Generally we will not call you for a missing assignment. We will keep the grade book in the Parent View up to date. If you do not have access to this, please contact the school so they can help you set it up.
Can my child use a calculator? Generally, your child CAN use a calculator. By the time students are in the sixth grade, we are focusing on higher level concepts and have moved past basic skills. HOWEVER, we will continue to work on our basic skills and there will be times when they CAN NOT use a calculator.
Can my child retake test or quizzes? If your child does poorly on a quiz or assignment, they can re do them, BUT there will be an additional assignment they will have to complete before they will be allowed to do this. Also, they will have to retake the quiz, before or after school or at lunch. This process will be the responsibility of the student. If they want to retake a quiz, they will need to arrange a time with me to do so. Test, however are not re-takable.
