Will this be in person?
We will be hosting this event in person! Location: Monterey County Office of Education
How do students register?
Teachers and/or coaches will register students. A lead teacher needs to support the registration process and also volunteer to support the event. We recommend that for every 7 students registered, one teacher volunteers. All students must be supervised by a school-designated chaperone.
Is there a limit to how many students can register?
Our limitation will be based on how many volunteers we have to facilitate tables. We have space for 12 students per school at this time. We encourage Monterey County teachers to please sign up to volunteer, especially if you are aware of a large group coming from your school! We will initially (subject to change) cap our registration at 80 students, but we expect that we can raise that amount once we secure more teacher volunteers.
Do you need volunteer teachers? What do we do?
Yes! We rely on teacher volunteers along with community partners for this to run smoothly. We have a teacher facilitator at each table with the table limited to 7 students per 1 facilitator. Teachers also support students in other ways. All roles are detailed in the volunteer registration form.
The Facilitator Role includes two main pieces:
Before the Festival, you will be assigned an activity. Please review your activity in advance, and work on it, anticipating ways students may solve it. If you have questions about your assigned activity, you are welcome to email lcarey@montereycoe.org for help.
During the Festival: Facilitate student conversations about your activity. Model the simplest level of the activity and support students getting started.
Don’t give away answers! Make sure students understand the rules/premise to the activity, but give them ample room to explore for themselves.
Ask questions and engage with their mathematical thinking. If a student is stuck, give them a good question to start them down a new line of thinking.
Be friendly and welcoming! Students respond to your personal excitement towards the festival. If you’re having a fun time with the math, they will be more likely to engage.
Will there be teacher volunteer (facilitator) training?
Yes! Facilitators receive training ahead of time along with the activity they will be facilitating. Facilitators ensure equity of student voice and encourage participation, fun, and perseverance. More specifics including details about the platform will be provided at a facilitator training.
The virtual facilitator trainings are 30 minutes to 45 minutes. Volunteers can select one to attend on:
