Lesson 1.7.2 Objective

In Herman Melville’s classic short story, the main character, Bartleby, experiences isolation in the American workplace. Students will read this selection in conjunction with The Scarlet Letter and “Indian Boarding School: The Runaways” to consider the effects of personal, social, and professional isolation on personal independence.
