Lesson 1.7.1
Lesson 1.7.1 Objective
The classic American novel The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, read with the poem “Indian Boarding School: The Runaways” and “Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street,” helps students think about the relationship between social isolation and independence. In The Scarlet Letter, students meet Hester Prynne, who is shunned by her community for an unlawful act. After reading the excerpt from The Scarlet Letter, students will demonstrate their understanding of how plot is developed through characterization and details about the historical and social setting of this society in a short written response.
