Recently, the California State Legislature passed Senate Bill (SB) 98, and Governor Newsom signed it into law on June 29, 2020. Ths law sets certain minimum standards for distance learning including supporting mental health and well-being of students, student engagement and outreach, and resources to address trauma and other impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To address these requirements of the law, we have included in our LCAP, regular instruction in social emotional learning that will take place district wide and in every classroom. The curriculum will teach students the skills they need to understand and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
This is a critical time for students to learn and use these skills to connect in a positive way to their teacher, classmates, principals, and to their campus culture.
If the teacher is using a District approved platform as directed and in accordance with distance learning training, if “zoom bombed”, the meeting may end immediately.
Note: Teachers should have a back up plan in case this happens.
Alteration of teacher images and posting on social media calls for an immediate parent/teacher/administrator meeting, progressive discipline and could draw a lawsuit by the teacher.
If the posting is defamatory, depending on the precise statement or visual representation-Implement progressive discipline and the teacher may have a civil lawsuit against the student/family.
If it is physically threatening to the teacher, e.g., a threat to attack, maim or kill:
A report it to the platform will be made, demand it be taken down immediately;
Possibly Seek a court injunction on behalf of the teacher and the District.
Site admin follows progressive discipline and works with law enforcement depending on the nature of the threat.
