William McDonough is a Career & Technology Education teacher at Masuk High School and is the main advisor and founder of our program. He teaches robotics engineering and computer programming classes. McDonough introduced VEX Robotics to Masuk High School in 2010 after hearing about the robotics program at his children's school. At the time, Masuk High School had no such program, so he felt that this program would create the perfect opportunity for students to grow their science, technology, engineering and math skills while also building leadership and team-building skills. McDonough aims for this program to be driven by the students, not the adults.

"I believe that the fact that you are building life skills is extremely important and will serve you all well as you navigate college and a career. For instance: collaborating with peers, dealing with adversity, time management, being a reliable and responsible teammate, interacting diplomatically when rejecting a teammate's idea or having your idea rejected, and dealing with winning/losing in a respectful and mature manner. These items on my list are more important than the technical knowledge you and your peers are developing."

"I was fascinated by how much freedom the students had in learning and experimenting on their own. I also realized that robotics is not just about robots but about learning other life skills like teamwork, building friendships, care for each other, sportsmanship. Masuk Robotics is really a community that I love being a part of and look forward to. I love travelling to competitions and simply interacting with all the students, other coaches, and parents. It has become like my second home and I feel lucky and honored to be a part of it!"

Katya Downey has been an active volunteer in Masuk Robotics for many years, even before becoming a coach. She programs for a living, and became interested in volunteering for the robotics program after learning about the programming aspect which supplied her with new information about coding robots and machinery. Downey aims for robotics to be a positive experience for students who are interested in the STEM field and fill the gap for those who are not involved in sports.

Dakota McDonough, daughter of program founder William McDonough, is Masuk Robotics' newest coach as of 2021-2022. She participated in VEX Robotics during high school, and she recalls her leadership experience joining an inexperienced team and guiding them along the way to Worlds. She strongly advocates for women in STEM and continues to provide leadership to both our high school and our middle school teams as an adult today.
