Our unit learning goals, as correlated to the Common Core State Standards, require students to understand operations by using number sense, models, and problem solving skills. They must understand where "tricks" and "short-cuts" come from and how they are derived, and that is exactly what our class lessons will lead to.
Note - 5th grade students will take the 5th grade NJSLA.
For those of you who are interested in supplemental materials, our very own elementary school libraries have a collection of math books available for the students to check out. I have looked through some of the collections and found problem solving books, stories relating math to real life situations and careers, and many helpful mini "textbooks" that break down specific topics for the students at their level. All of these books can be looked up in the library database. Hope to see you reading them soon!
