How do I Get Started?

Thank you for being willing to help with this project. To start recording straight away, just click the blue microphone button from any device with a camera or, if you want to record a video your own way, you can send it to us at careers@monkton.org.uk. Try wetransfer.com if you are having trouble with sending a large file.

Why film?

There are many sites with careers videos but none have been recorded by people who have stood where Monktonians now stand or who understand their questions, concerns and priorities like you do. You are uniquely placed to give our current pupils an insight into what, for you may be just day to day life, but for them is a glimpse of a world that could shape their future.

How do I record it?

You don’t need any fancy equipment, just 2 minutes and a camera phone.

Visit this link using any phone, tablet or laptop that can record video
Sign in with your google account (this is just to allow the video to upload). If you don't have an account, have a look at the FAQs below.
Record video then click upload.

If you can, please drop an email to careers@monkton.org.uk to say who you are and which video is yours. We would love to give your link to the school (e.g. Joe Blogs OM 1998-2004 - Software Engineer) but we won't do that unless you provide us with the information. If you would prefer not, the video will work just as well without any details.

What do I say?

Chat informally as you wander round your office or garden, show us what you do, prop your phone up on the table and ask a friend to sit down and interview you, the opportunities are endless and the choice is yours. Below there are some suggested questions you could answer, but you are the expert on your career. Just tell us what you wish someone had told you when you were at school.

Who are you and what do you do?
What does a typical day look like?
What skills, qualities and qualifications do you need to be successful?
What are the best and worst bits of your job?
What do you wish someone had told you before you started?

I don't have a Gmail account

The software requires a google account to submit videos. If you don't have one you can:

Create a free account here.
Record your own video using a phone or your own recording software. For suggestions on how to send this to us, click here.

Got any tips?

Do:

Find a well lit space
Use whatever phone or similar you have to hand
Make it as formal or informal as you like - wander round and show us what you do!
Give us the true picture - the good and bad
Remember the boys and girls probably know nothing about your industry so if you trade in synthetic derivatives, you may need to break it down for us!

Don’t feel you need to:

Make it long - one or two minutes is fine but it can be longer if you want
Use special equipment or make it polished and professional (but if your passion is video production, go for it!)
Spend lots of time editing - I can crop the start and finish and neaten things up if needed

Troubleshooting

The upload system is very simple but occasionally it fails. Usually the issue is one of the following:

You have cookies disabled
You accidently refreshed the page (or scrolled up to far on Android)
You don't have a google account - have a look at "I don't have a Gmail account" above.

Record your own

If you want to record using your own software, please feel free. You can send it via WeTransfer to careers@monkton.org.uk

Any format is fine, as long as we can upload it to the careers department's private YouTube channel.

What will happen to my video?

Your video will help the next generation of Monktonians make more informed choices about their career.

The only personal details that will be published are the ones you include in the video. If you provide it, we would love to show your name and your link to the school (Joe Blogs OM 1998-2004 - Software Engineer) but we won't do this unless you tell us.

We will not sell it on, plaster it all over the internet or edit in a way that would misrepresent what you are saying.
