There has been an increase in measles cases among travelers returning to Australia, with outbreaks reported in countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, India, as well as in Africa, Europe, the UK, the Middle East, and the USA. Measles is a contagious viral illness that can spread from person to person, but there are ways to protect yourself and stay healthy.
Be aware of the following symptoms:
Runny nose
Red eyes
Cough
Fever
Rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body
Symptoms can appear 7 to 18 days after exposure. The rash usually begins 3-4 days after the first symptoms.
If you develop symptoms of measles:
Seek medical care promptly.
Wear a mask and call ahead to the health service informing them that you have symptoms of measles to ensure you can be isolated from others.
Contact the University Health Service or Urgent Care Clinic (provides urgent but not emergency care and is cost-free for those with and without a Medicare card).
Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) vaccines are available for free at the University Health Services on campus. If you do not have documented evidence of receiving two doses of a measles-containing vaccine or proof of immunity, you can make an appointment online HERE.
