Prof. Sharon Lewin
Leading infectious diseases expert, Professor Sharon Lewin, is the inaugural Director of the Doherty Institute. She is also a Professor of Medicine at The University of Melbourne and a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Practitioner Fellow. As an infectious diseases physician and basic scientist, her laboratory focuses on basic, translational and clinical research aimed at finding a cure for HIV and understanding the interaction between HIV and hepatitis B virus. Her laboratory is funded by the NHMRC, the National Institutes of Health, The Wellcome Trust, the American Foundation for AIDS Research and multiple commercial partnerships. She is also the Chief Investigator of a NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence (CRE), The Australian Partnership for Preparedness Research on Infectious Diseases Emergencies (APPRISE) that aims to bring together Australia’s leading experts in clinical, laboratory and public health research to address the key components required for a rapid and effective emergency response to infectious diseases.
Prof. Stephanie Gras
Professor Stephanie Gras is the head of the Viral and Structural Immunology lab at La Trobe University. She is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and a lab lead of currently 16 staff/students within the department of Biochemistry and Genetics. Her lab focuses on the T cell response towards infections, especially viruses (SARS-CoV-2, HIV and influenza), to understand the molecular mechanism of an effective immune response. She has successfully secured funding from the ARC, NHMRC, and MRFF, and published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in top journals including Science, Nature, Nature Immunology, Immunity and Science Immunology.

Associate Professor Maria Kaparakis-Liaskos
Associate Professor Maria Kaparakis-Liaskos is Head of the Host-pathogen Interactions and Bacterial Membrane Vesicles Laboratory at La Trobe University and Deputy Director of the La Trobe Research Centre for Extracellular Vesicles. A/Prof Kaparakis-Liaskos' primary research interests are focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions with particular focus on Helicobacter pylori and bacterial membrane vesicles. Her work spans the fields of microbiology and immunology. Maria has received multiple international and national awards, including the Australian Society of Microbiology Frank Fenner Award, an Inaugural veski Inspiring Women Fellowship, a Victorian Young Tall Poppy Award and the International Milstein Young Investigator Award.
