I-DMD embraces the best talents for exciting projects. Please read this page carefully for opening position application process details and policies, as well as available positions to-date. We greatly appreciate your interest and look forward to hearing from you!
Graduate students at I-DMD work on cutting-edge topics in multidisciplinary research field, and receive significant training on the cutting edge digital design and manufacturing tools, various AM technologies, software programing and Artifical Intellgence (AI) skills, lattice and other multiscale smart functional materials. Students will also gain rich hands on exprience during the development of a new smart additive manufacturing process, which enables the fabrication of next generation of digital functional composites. Close collaborations with faculty memebers and industrial companies from different fields will definitely broaden the student's vision and make them ready for the upcoming forth industrial revolution.
I-DMD actively seeks self-motivated graduate students, postdocs, and visiting students/scholars for a wide range of research projects aforementioned above. Undergraduate students for thesis, Final Year Project or study break research are also welcomed. To apply for the open positions, please contact Dr. Tang by email (yunlong.tang1@monash.edu). Please provide the following information about your candidacy, and note that inquiries without any of these components will NOT be answered.
Specify the area(s) and the position (undergraduate, master, Ph.D., or postdoc) you are interested in;
Briefly summarize your previous research experience relevant to the position you are applying for;
Indicate any external financial support/scholarship you will hold;
Attach a detailed CV, including undergraduate and graduate WAM(Weighted Average Marks), research experience, expertise, and a list of publications.
The detailed introduction on how to calculate WAM can be found from the following website

In this project, a new hybrid additive manufacturing process will be developed. In the developed process, multi types of material can be fabricated on different design scales in a single part. It enables us to develop a new type smart digital composite material. The properties of the fabricated materials can be controlled by the external signal. The newly developed materials and fabrication process can be used for a wide range of applications such as soft-robots and wearable electronics. Students with mechanical and material engineering backgrounds are welcome to apply (Multiple Ph.D. students needed)
This project focuses on the development of DfAM tools which can guide designers to further take advantages of AM technologies. Specific DfAM tools targeted in this projects are:
AI aided parts selection and manufacturability evaluation for AM (1 PhD student needed)
Integrated materials, geometry and process design for AM (1 PhD student needed)
Design and process planning for multiscale lattice structures fabricated by AM (1 PhD student needed)
This project aims to develop a digital twin model of additive manufacturing process. In the developed digital twin, a set of sensors will be used to collect data from the working AM machine. Based on the collected data and data-driven surrogate model, the virtual twin of a phsycal fabrication process will be built. The virtual twin can be used to detect the printing failure and further optimize the additive manufacturing processes. (1 Ph.D. needed)
