Here at I-DMD (Intelligent Digital Manufacturing and Design) Lab Monash, we mainly focus on the exploration of the digital future of design and manufacturing, espcially on AI aided product and material design, smart manufacturing, advanced additive manufacturing and its related design methods. I-DMD is a multi-disciplinary team, since it is affliated to both the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department and the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Monash University in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. A team of graduate and undergraduate students led by Dr. Tang who specializes in digital design and manufacturing research is working on cutting-edge technologies and research projects. This is possible thanks to our numerous sponsors and partners both within the univeristy and from industries throughout the world.
Computational design is the application of computational strategies and models to the design process. We aims to take using of CAD tools, optimization algorithms, as well as data-driven or AI models to help designers to further improve product's functional performance. Besides that, other key product life-cycle considerations, such as cost, environmental impact, will aslo be considered.
Smart manufacturing is a technology-driven approach that employs a wide range of digital manufacturing technologies with advanced AI techniques. Our lab focuses on the developing of core techniques in smart manufacturing to further improve the efficiency and adapability of manufacturing processes by taking advantages of the data collected from Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a type of manufacturing process which fabricate the part directly from its 3D model, usually layer uopon layer. By joining materials, AM processes can fabricate parts with multi-scale complexities. Our lab focuses on developing advanced AM processes and its related design methods to further improve the functional performance of designed products.
