Who are we ?
We are a group of International students studying Bachelor of Nutrition Science and Master of Dietetics at Monash University. We worked together during summer 2022. While the internship was initially planned for in-person engagement, we were restricted by the COVID-19 Omicron wave in Melbourne and forced to move online after the first week. However, throughout the pandemic, we learnt to be flexible and adaptive. We made the most of the virtual internship experience.
With insights and stories from Monash Nutrition and Dietetics international graduates,
we aimed to empower future international nutrition professionals to embrace the challenges ahead and create their own career journeys.
How did it all begin?
It started with our lecturer and mentor, Dr Tammie Choi (tammie.choi@monash.edu), gathering 33 international students from Bachelor of Nutrition Science and Master of Dietetics across all year levels to work together for 5 weeks during our summer break. This internship allowed us to learn the importance of various employability skills in our future careers while providing us the platform to develop such skills, including effective communication with other team members, teamwork when developing resources, professionalism during our interviews with the graduates, etc.
Process and the product
Using qualitative research methodology, we interviewed 20 Monash Nutrition and Dietetics graduates who were international students in the Nutrition and Dietetics programs at Monash University. Since graduation, some obtained Australian residency and worked in Australian industries or hospitals; others returned home and translated their Australian nutrition and dietetic knowledge to respective local food and healthcare settings in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malasyia, Brunei, etc. We invited them to share their different career paths, transition journeys, job scopes and unique experience as international students / graduates with us.
With the interview transcripts, our data analysis team summarised all content and synthesised succinct stories. We then developed a range of products to showcase these stories and wisdom from the graduates. Our products would not be possible without both the insights from the interviewees and the work done by our analysis team.
Our product development teams, namely the website team, the social media team and the printable team, then worked on developing various digital media content. Using the stories summarised by the analysis team, the three teams come up with different products that we think suit best for our international students. These developed resources are fun, interactive, more importantly, informational. (Note: The names of the interviewees have been changed in order to protect their privacy.)
Message to our international students:
As fellow international students, we share not only the difficulties, we also recognise the strengths of being an international student. We hope after reading our developed resources on this website, you not only feel you have learnt about the nutrition profession, but also feel inspired and empowered to pursue your career goals and overcome your challenges as much as we do when working on this project.
All the best to our future nutrition and dietetics professionals!
