Molehill Primary Academy Newsletter

Term 3 2021 - 2022

Principal's Welcome

What a wonderful term we have had!

Pupils have all worked incredibly hard and we are very proud of the dedication they have shown to their studies. We are also very pleased that they too are proud of their achievements - we enjoy celebrating their work with them on a daily basis. Improving writing, in particular, has been a key focus this term and the progress we have seen is just brilliant!

We have also been incredibly grateful for the caring and thoughtful comments parents have taken time to write about Molehill, its staff and pupils, on our recent survey. We really value your feedback and it is brilliant to hear how much you appreciate our hard work as we continue to ensure the very best for your children. You will know that this term has been particularly tricky in terms of staff absence but the entire staff team rallied together and weathered the storm. We look forward to restrictions easing further next term and to a time in the near future when we can invite parents back into school.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We wish you a very happy February break.

PYP Inquiry

Little Moles

This term we have been looking at how the world works. We have looked at the weather and why it is important to have the various weather changes we do. We have been learning about all the different seasons and what changes we may notice during each season change. We have been talking about ourselves and what makes us different and the same? What similarities we share with our immediate family and what is different, learning about twins and how some are identical and others not. We discussed how things grow and change over time.

Kangaroo Class

This term we have begun our new transdisciplinary theme called 'How the world works' where we have been looking at different patterns within our natural environment. We started off looking at weather, inquiring into seasons and discussing our current season, Winter. We particularly enjoyed making wind socks and rain gauges to measure our current weather. Many stories have been read in relation to our inquiry that led to some class investigations, for example, looking at freezing and melting. Recently we have been looking closer at day/night and light/dark, observing shadows and how these can be created in a natural and manmade environment.

Wallaby Class

This term, Wallaby have been noticing and analysing patterns and cycles to help them interpret and explain their environment. We started off by looking at 'What is a pattern and cycle?' We inquired about patterns of day and night and of the seasons, taking a closer look at our current season; Winter. We explored water and how it freezes when its cold and when we looked closely we could identify patterns in the icicles. We listened to many stories linking closely to our inquiry. 'The snowy day' by Ezra Jack Keats which explored the theme of winter, snow and ice and, 'The owl who was afraid of the dark' by Jill Tomlinson which linked nicely to night and day, light and dark. We especially enjoyed using the sun and the torches to explore shadows using our bodies and resources. We have been extremely creative and explored different art techniques, such as printing and collage with a focus on texture and patterns.

Leopard Class

This term, Leopard class have continued our transdisciplinary theme Where We Are in Place and Time. We have enjoyed learning about different places around the World; London, Paris, Rome, Egypt, Kenya and New York City! We learned lots of facts and produced some fantastic pieces of writing, all with help from our friend Felix the rabbit from our key text 'Letters from Felix' which we all thoroughly enjoyed reading. This term, Year 1 have been learning about decisions we make on a journey including what to wear for different climates and weather, to keep us warm or cool us off. After recording our own weather chart, we are now experts at understanding the weather - we know that the 4 seasons of the year impact this too! We have also produced some lovely artwork relating to our Inquiry.

Lion Class

This term, Lions have been exploring How we Express Ourselves. To begin, we explored the different ways that we communicate our feelings, thoughts and experiences, such as painting, using sculpture, writing, dancing, and singing. We learnt about how Greta Thunberg expressed her concerns about global warming through protest, and also how Chinese people celebrate the new lunar year. In PE we interpreted traditional tales and nursery rhymes through dance, and we have begun to learn about poetry.

Tiger Class

This term Tiger class has loved learning about celebrations from around the world whilst exploring the transdisciplinary theme 'How we express ourselves'. The children have been learning about why different celebrations are important to different groups of people and finding out about the traditions linked to each celebration. The children have enjoyed listening to lots of stories explaining the origins of celebrations and identifying similarities and differences between celebrations. We think the children's favourite part of this inquiry has been learning about and trying foods linked to each celebration! They have enjoyed making and eating Diwali sweets, eating jam donuts linked to our story Hetty's Hannuka and trying fortune cookies as part of our Chinese New Year celebrations.

Hedgehog Class

Hedgehog class have loved investigating different laws, traditions and values this term, specifically, the different styles of government around the world. Within our transdisciplinary theme 'How we organise ourselves' we have been on a virtual trip to Athens and China and looked at how the countries were and currently are organised in terms of leadership and hence the impact on daily life. We have then described our perfect world through poetry and wrote speeches persuading people to vote for us to be Prime Minister after being inspired by our class text 'The Accidental Prime Minister'.

Badger Class

Term three has given Badger class an opportunity to create their own country with their own laws, traditions and values. Through the transdisciplinary theme of 'how we organise ourselves' , children compared countries before creating their very own. We have had some great ideas on ways in which governments could help the environment as well as its citizens. Our class text 'The Accidental Prime Minister' complimented our inquiry perfectly as well as developing the children's reading skills. A particular highlight this term has been our virtual trips where children have navigated Athens and China independently through the use of a google earth project.

Fox Class

This term are transdisciplinary theme has been How We Express Ourselves with inquiries based on the central idea that creativity can help people express their feelings beliefs and values. After investigating the variety of forms that art takes, children explored paintings by Georgia O'Keefe and Andy Warhol, traditional tales, news reports, Hinduism and drama. Pupils were open minded, reflective and risk takers during the term as they identified the meanings they felt were being expressed within each. They used colour theory to express themselves in pastels, based on the work of O'Keefe; and consolidated their social skills during short drama presentations from the class reader 'Matilda".

Kestrel Class

Kestrels have thoroughly enjoyed exploring stories this term, through our central idea of 'Stories are told in many ways and may influence people’s beliefs, values and understanding of the world.' We have read numerous stories this term from all sorts of different cultures and backgrounds and compared their respective beliefs and understandings of the world. The children have also developed their understanding of what makes a good story and have worked incredibly hard on their own story writing this term. We have also linked this term's inquiry with our science. We have been learning about the work of Charles Darwin on adaptation and evolution and have compared this scientific understanding with the various creation stories we have explored, discussing how so many different creation stories have come about and whether these stories are compatible with the scientific understanding of the creation of the world.

Eagle Class

During this term, Eagles have been exploring different types of texts and their structures; from narratives to non-chronological reports and poetry linked to changes in leisure and entertainment over the last century. Our inquiry has also focused on how writing has changed communities and in particular we have explored the speech of Martin Luther King. Eagles have become knowledgeable about the decade of the 1960s and how this era produced a cultural revolution in art, music, food, cinema and technology.

Falcon Class

Throughout this term, Falcon class have really enjoyed learning about biodiversity and exploring how things in nature are connected to and dependent on each other for survival. We have linked this to our science inquiry by exploring how organisms are classified and investigating the work of Carl Linnaeus. The children have been thoroughly gripped by our class novel - The Last Wild - and they have enjoyed making predictions and generating theories based on what they have read. We have explored character and the children have written some fantastic internal monologues as if they were the main character in the story. One of the children's favourite aspects of this inquiry has been exploring printing in art and creating animal prints of endangered species.

An Important Message from the EYFS Team!

have.

Fantastic Fred

The Fantastic Fred Experience is part of the Good Mental Health Matters campaign, funded by NHS Kent, to help raise awareness of mental health among young people in Kent, and equip children at a very early age to improve their lifelong emotional wellbeing. The Fantastic Fred Bus was with us for two days this term and all of our children were able to take part in a live, interactive and engaging performance. Specifically designed to inform, equip and build resilience, it delivered simple, memorable and practical ways that young children can look after their mental health and explained the link between our physical and mental health. We also received follow up resources and materials to share with parents.

Mental Health Week

Mental Health week took place from the 7th-13th February. This year's theme was ‘Growing Together’. We encouraged both adults and children to think about how they had grown and how they could help others to grow. Place2Be provided some excellent resources including exclusive interviews with presenter and Place2Be Ambassador Josh Smith, familiar faces from the world of TV, music and sport also shared their stories of emotional growth with us.

These videos were shared with you to help start a conversation at home about growth and the different challenges we may face.

House Captains

Our House Captains relaunched the House Point system earlier this term. They delivered vital messages about teamwork and resilience in a virtual assembly. Their speeches were meaningful, well-planned and expertly delivered. We are very proud of them all!

Number Day

On Friday 4th February, we celebrated Number Day by wearing something with a number on to help raise money for the NSPCC. In our classes we also explored a particular number and completed activities based on it.

Cricket

A huge thank you to Adrian Crust, Community Cricket Coach, Kent Cricket, for providing excellent Cricket coaching for our pupils in Key Stage Two. They all learnt lots of new skills and most importantly, had lots of fun!

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day 8th February reminded children how to be online safely and what to do if at any point they feel unsafe. Key messages were how to be respectful of others, how to stay alert to possible dangers, encouraging others to use safety tools and how important it is that children speak up if anything is worrying them or making them feel uncomfortable.

Attendance

Attendance at school is vitally important.

If your child needs to be absent from school FOR ANY REASON please contact the school as soon as possible on the 1st day of absence, clearly stating the reason for absence. If you are unable to do this, please reply to the text or email sent to you. As a final resort please send a note to school with your child on their return to school.
