Molehill Primary Academy Newsletter

Term 3 2022 - 2023

Principal's Welcome

We have had an absolutely fantastic term!

One highlight of this module must be Number Day.  As you will no doubt be aware, we all really enjoyed dressing up to celebrate and promote the importance of mathematics. Thank you so much for supporting us, and the NSPCC, during this vital time.  We hope that you enjoyed sharing your children's learning and I am sure that you reflected, as we do, how fantastic our pupils are at maths!

We have been immensely grateful for the kind and considerate comments parents have taken time to write about Molehill, its staff and pupils, on our recent survey. We really value your feedback and it is brilliant to hear how much you appreciate our hard work as we continue to strive for the very best for your children.

As a result of this feedback we have listened to your requests to streamline our communication as much as we can and so we have endeavoured to pack this newsletter full of key dates, messages and reminders so that we can work to reduce the amount of emails we send you.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We wish you a very happy February break.

Key Messages

School Dinners

Please pay for school dinners in advance to avoid outstanding balances and debts accumulating over time.

Lost Property

We have a large number of items in our lost property. Please make certain that your child's belongings are correctly labelled.

Deliveries during the Academy day

We have had an increasing number of deliveries to the school office during the school day where pupils have left items at home. This is disruptive to our school day and wastes your time during the day too.  Please ensure that your child arrives at school well-equipped and well-prepared for the day ahead. Providing your child with a checklist of items they need for school will help them to become more independent and will prepare them for a successful adult life.

Changes to Term Dates

Please be reminded that the following changes have been made to term dates:

In light of the announcement of His Majesty’s coronation on Saturday 6 May 2023, an additional bank holiday has been announced on Monday 8 May. Our Academy will close on this day.

Previously published term dates for the beginning of 2023/24: INSET days - Tuesday 29th August and Wednesday 30th August; First teaching day - Thursday 31st August

Revised term dates at the beginning of 2023/24 for : INSET days - Wednesday 30th August and Thursday 31st August;  First teaching day - Friday 1st September

Dates for your Diary

Timings of the Academy Day

Please be reminded of the timings of the Academy day. Pupils are expected to be in class by 8:50am, ready to be registered by teachers. Our school gates open at 8:40am. It is important that pupils arrive on time to the Academy, vital learning is lost if they are late.

Pupils in Reception classes finish their school day at 3:10pm and all other pupils finish at 3:15pm. Please make certain that you collect your child on time. We have had instances where parents are repeatedly late to collect their child and we will continue to monitor this robustly. Where there are concerns about lateness we may need to refer this to  the Local Authority.

PYP Inquiry

Little Moles

How the World Works' is the transdisciplinary theme we have been exploring this term using the central idea of ‘all living things go through a process of change.’ We followed two core texts, ‘Super Worm’ by Julia Donaldson and the children's favourite ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. We created a wormery to see how worms travelled and how they grow and read some very interesting facts. The children were all very enthusiastic about digging for worms and were all incredibly brave, building their confidence and working as a team to collect them. We also created our very own super worms through different art media. The children have learnt the lifecycle of a butterfly and we plan to continue these activities next term.

The children enjoyed celebrating the Chinese New Year and wore red which is said to be a lucky colour. While waiting for their Chinese Banquet we explored different movements as we danced to Chinese music and incorporated some dragon dancing into our routine. We watched lots of videos to give us inspiration. The children attempted to use chopsticks which was really tricky but a great way to work on the fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

Lastly, we welcomed a new member of the Little Moles team ‘Candyfloss’ to the classroom (the classroom bunny) where the children will learn to care and look after her. Candyfloss has already been a great addition to the classroom. Little Moles have had a very fun-filled educational term and we are looking forward to the next.

Kangaroo and Wallaby Class

This module's transdisciplinary theme is ‘Where we are in place and time’ with the central idea that ‘Everyone has their own special place in the world.’  We have used the core text 'Here we are' by Oliver Jeffers to help support our learning. We started off  learning about Space and where Earth’s place is in the wider Universe, we looked at the Earth’s environment and our place on the planet as humans.

We then moved on to looking at Earth and what makes Earth so special, its many wonders, different habitats, animals, human diversity and a guide to living well. with a big focus on the main concepts of kindness, tolerance and environmental responsibility. We used Google earth to help explore the earth and take virtual trips around the globe as well as walk around our local area. Finally we looked at who in our community could help us and how we can help others.

Key Stage One

Key Stage 1 children have really enjoyed their learning linked to the events of the Great Fire of London this term. As part of our theme ‘Where we are in place and time’ the children have explored what London was like in the past and compared images and maps of London from the past to current day London.

Our central idea for this term has been ‘Events in our history may shape our environment and lives.’ To start our inquiry the children enjoyed taking part in an exciting drama workshop where they retold the events of the Great Fire of London, learning about the materials houses were made from in the past and how this caused the fire to spread so quickly.

In our Art lessons children have responded to artwork depicting the Great Fire of London. As part of this learning the children have started to develop an understanding of different historical sources and are beginning to be able to identify the most reliable sources of historical information. The children have also created some beautiful pieces of artwork depicting the Great Fire of London.

We were lucky to have Fireman Simon visit Molehill and share with us examples of how the Fire Service has changed through history. The children enjoyed seeing examples of how the uniform firefighters wear has changed and learning about the equipment they use to put out fires.

As a consequence of all these wonderful learning experiences the children have produced some fantastic pieces of writing, including; letters to Fireman Simon, diary entries writing in role as Vlad from the story Vlad and the Great Fire of London, fact files about the famous diarist  Samuel Pepys and factual writing about the Fire Service in 1666.

Lower Key Stage Two

This term in LKS2 we have based our learning under the transdisciplinary theme 'Where we are in place and time' with our inquiries focussing on links between societies and places, comparing different opinions and beliefs globally and investigating how relationships have changed over time. Much of our inquiry has been delivered through our work on the Ancient Greeks and Greek Mythology where we investigated connections and links between the different city states at that time. Through our work on Sikhism and Ancient Greece we discovered many differences in opinions and beliefs which we compared with our own. Many of these were also portrayed in the exciting Greek myths such as Theseus and the Minotaur and Medusa which children used to support reading and writing. We also discovered how relationships, particularly between those in power and ordinary people, have changed over time including widespread democracy; a legacy of Ancient Greece.

Upper Key Stage Two

This term, years 5 and 6 have been exploring the transdisciplinary theme, 'Where we are in place and time', through the central idea, 'Human migration is a response to many factors including social and economic circumstances'. Both year groups have explored the idea of migration as a whole, looking at push and pull factors and linking this to our understanding of the world in PSHE lessons with a focus on media portrayal of refugees.

As well as this, we have investigated migration due to religion, whilst looking at the 5 pillars of Islam and migration throughout History, particularly during the Industrial Revolution. Investigating child labour conditions and laws was also thoroughly enjoyed and will be carried on next term!

Finally, both year groups have been exploring texts that depict migration but for different reasons. Year 6 have been investigating the text 'Windrush Child', which tells the story of a boy called Leonard who has migrated from Jamaica to Southampton to live with his father, Whereas, Year 5 have been exploring the exciting story of Journey to Jo'burg which depicts the bravery of two children who trek across South Africa to find their mother who is working in Johannesburg so that their baby sister can receive medical help. The story takes place during apartheid and we were very fortunate to hear a real life recount of life at the time from our very own Principal who lived in South Africa for a short while during this time!

Number Day

This term the whole school supported the NSPCC by taking part in Number Day! It was an incredible day with both children and staff all dressing up as a number and donating £1 to this very worthwhile cause. All classes completed activities around their given class numbers with both Kangaroo and Wallaby class playing spot the difference and investigating doubles as part of the number 2, Fox class worked on their 8 times tables using various games and bingo boards, Kestrel class investigated the fifth pillar of Islam as their number was 5 and Eagle class looked at the prefix 'tri' and extended their knowledge of working with angles in a triangle all based on the number 3! In addition to all of this excitement, we were fortunate to welcome in all of the parents for a 'Marvellous Maths' event, which saw all classes getting involved in completing maths with a difference. Thank you to everyone that joined in on the day, the children are still commenting on how much fun they had!

Young Voices

After several months of hard work and rehearsal, Molehill Primary Academy’s Young Voices Choir finally made it to the O2 Arena, London on the 18th January for this year’s Young Voices concert. All the children (and adults) who attended had an amazing experience singing along with music legend and M People lead singer Heather Small. Singing amongst a choir of over 8,000 children, Molehill’s pupils had their vocals recorded for a charity single and became honorary beatboxers for the night when they sang alongside world champion beatboxers The Beatbox Collective. As always, Andy Instone and his Urban Strides dancers entertained and inspired everyone and the choir enjoyed singing some fabulous songs. The behaviour of our pupils throughout the trip was exemplary and they did themselves and the school proud. We can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Amazing Animal Encounter

Little Moles were extremely fortunate to have an amazing animal encounter workshop. They have been learning all about living and non-living things, life cycles, changes over time and similarities and differences.

The amazing animal world visit supported their learning from this module and gave the children a hands-on learning experience where they were given the opportunity to hold and interact fully with the different animals whilst gaining confidence and valuable information from each handler.  They showed the learner profile attributes of being  caring towards the animals and a risk taker especially when handling the snake.

Road Safety

On Monday 9th January 'Kip the Bear' worked with our EYFS and KS1 classes to help them understand how to keep themselves and others safe. The workshop was run by KCC and taught them new safety words, skills and strategies for being safer when out and about whether they are walking, riding their bikes or scooters.  They all took part in learning the Kent road 5 step safety club rules. STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, THINK, HOLD HANDS and then CROSS the road.

Mental Health Week 6th -13th February

During this week the children have been talking about their mental health and completing activities within their classes to support them to keep good mental health. This year’s theme was ‘Let’s Connect’. Assemblies were held by our Emotional Wellbeing Advisor Nnamdi Okoye for each Key Stage. Nnamdi works for Kent Mental Health Support Teams and will be providing emotional wellbeing support for our school moving forward.

Safer Internet Day 7th February

The children and staff also recognised Safer Internet day on Tuesday 7 February 2023. The Theme this year was ‘Want to talk about it?’ Making space for conversations about online life. Children engaged in the important messages learnt and were able to create some wonderful posters which will be displayed across the school.
