Molehill Primary Academy Newsletter

Term 1 2023 - 2024

Principal's Welcome

We have been so pleased and proud to welcome so many parents into our Academy this module. Whether it was to attend our PTA meetings; share learning with pupils on our Cultural Day; celebrate with pupils at Fabulous Finish; or to enjoy coffee and cake at our Macmillan coffee afternoon - it's been a really special term as a result of your engagement with us.

Our pupils have all settled into the new academic year remarkably well and we have been really pleased to witness the exceptional learning and new knowledge gained. You will see from our newsletter that there have been lots of wonderful, memorable experiences for children to learn from outside the classroom and, as we head into the next module, we know that these opportunities will be even greater!

We wish you a magical October break - filled with fantastic family time.

PYP Inquiry

Little Moles

Little Moles have had an excellent start to the school year. The children have settled well into their class and daily routine and have already learnt so much about who they are, how they grow and how to keep their mind and body healthy following our transdisciplinary theme of 'Who We Are'. Using our core texts ‘Marvellous me’ and ‘couch potato’, the children were able to compare ways to take care of their bodies and minds whilst being active. We had a cooking experience with Chef Jen on how to make couscous and used a variety of different ingredients to suit our individual and unique tastes. Through play they have learnt to take turns and share. What a good start to the year!

Kangaroo and Wallaby Class

It has been a fantastic start of the year. I am delighted that all children settled in exceptionally well in their first year of 'big school'. Their enthusiasm, engagement, and commitment to their learning have been truly commendable. It is evident that they have formed positive relationships with their peers, teachers, and the wider school community. Our current learning focus centres around the central idea of "Unique Identities Influence the Choices Humans Make." Through our core text, "All Are Welcome," we have guided the children on a fascinating inquiry journey aimed at exploring various lines of thought, including: Who I am, how different strengths and characteristics make me an individual and human relationships, including friends, family, and community.

Through this exploration, we developed a deep appreciation for the uniqueness and value of every individual. We encouraged them to embrace both the similarities and differences between themselves and others, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment. Additionally, we aimed to nurture vital social skills, such as taking turns, sharing, active listening, and recognising, naming, and positively dealing with their feelings. The children created self portraits and have practised name writing as part of our Art focus of identity.

Key Stage One

This term, KS1 have been focusing on the transdisciplinary theme 'Who we are' and exploring the central idea 'Learning about ourselves helps us understand and connect to others in the world'. The children started by exploring what makes them an individual before moving on to identifying similarities and differences between themselves and their friends. The book 'Can I build another me?' gave the children a brilliant insight into what makes an individual and the children produced lots of wonderful writing about it. As part of their Computing lessons, children have learned what their personal details are and understand the importance of keeping this information safe. The children have learned about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle and the eatwell plate which shows us the food groups we need for a balanced diet. The children have also explored where they live; learning about the location of Molehill as part of Maidstone, Kent, England, the UK and the world. They enjoyed visiting St Martin's church and learning about how people can belong to the religion of Christianity and learning about links St Martin's has to our community. We have finished off our term with a very creative action for our inquiry. The children have produced beautiful posters and poems to celebrate who they are, including lovely pictures of themselves doing something they enjoy. Designing and making fruit kebabs as part of this term's Fabulous Finish brought a busy term to a fantastic end. Well done KS1 for all of the hard work in Module 1!

Lower Key Stage Two

Hedgehog, Fox and Badger classes began the new school year under the transdisciplinary theme 'Who We Are'. The central idea was that culture has an impact on people’s actions. We began by using thinking and communication skills to define our own cultures and share these with our peers. This was developed further through the exciting experience of a whole-school culture day which informed us of different values and beliefs among cultures. We extended this idea to our Historical Study of Anglo-Saxons and Beowulf, a related text. The children produced a range of exciting texts based on this story. We also celebrated Black History Month by studying important actions by black people globally, and how some of these people contributed to cultural changes. In Science and DT, we discussed healthy foods from a range of cultures and designed pizza toppings to include these. Finally, we had an amazing trip to Kidzania where the children had hands-on experience of a variety of possible careers.

Upper Key Stage Two

This term, Years 5 and 6 have all been investigating the central idea: identity and thinking can be influenced through the media. To begin this inquiry, classes unpicked what media was and the various forms it has taken over the years, including learning about the printing press, the first telephone and more recently the invention of computers and artificial intelligence. Using this knowledge, we then investigated different pieces of media and how they are used to influence people in today's society, such as the use of flyers and promotional videos by charitable organisations and the use of newspaper articles presenting differing opinions on zoos. To help us with our focus of animal treatment in the media, we visited the wonderful Wingham Wildlife Park. The children all had a fantastic day and came away with additional knowledge about various animal species, supporting their learning of biomes, animal life-cycles (year 5) and classification (year 6). This trip also supported them to write animal fact files, a recount, a balanced argument and persuasive presentations influencing support for animal charities.

Little Ears

We are running a group called ‘Little Ears’ on a Friday morning every month. This group is for parents and carers of babies and preschool children who have a hearing impairment. It is a chance to learn strategies to support language and communication development, play, learn new signs and interact with other families.

Kidzania

Year 3 and 4, along with Oaks, visited Kidzania- a city just for children. They were able to experience a wealth of various careers such as floristry, veterinarians, police officers and many more. The children had a fantastic time and really enjoyed the opportunities that they were able to take part in.

Cultural Day

Cultural day was a tremendous success. It was a sensational celebration of diversity within our school community, and we are thrilled that our children had the opportunity to engage in such an enriching experience. The spirit of the day was truly remarkable, with children and staff alike embracing the occasion by donning unique and vibrant attire representing various cultures. Witnessing this kaleidoscope of colours throughout the school was truly a sight to behold. Furthermore, the children's taste buds were treated to an array of delectable dishes from all corners of the world. We are immensely grateful to the parents who generously contributed their culinary delights and enabled our children to relish in this multicultural feast. We were privileged to have parents so willing to come in and share firsthand accounts about their own cultures and traditions. By openly discussing their customs and beliefs, you provided our children with valuable insights that will help them develop a greater understanding and respect for diversity.

By celebrating Cultural Day, we aimed to expose our children to a wide range of cultures, fostering understanding, tolerance, and respect among them. It is our firm belief that by embracing our diverse community, we create a richer and more inclusive learning environment, enabling our children to grow into well-rounded global citizens. Through the celebration of events such as Cultural Day, we strive to nurture globally minded individuals, who not only acknowledge their place in an intercultural global community but also demonstrate the attitudes and actions of internationally minded people. By instilling these values within our children, we equip them with essential skills that will shape their future lives and careers.

Balanced System

We are delighted to share that we have now achieved accredited status to The Balanced System. This is a whole school approach making sure that the right provisions are available for parents, carers and school staff to help children and young people develop their speech, language and communication. This qualification has taken us eighteen months to achieve and our report comments reflect the commitment Molehill Primary Academy has given to the drive to improve speech, language and communication needs for all, particularly post pandemic.

‘The specialist teacher and senior leadership are skilled and committed to supporting speech, language and communication and it is essential to recognise and support this as a school going forwards’.

Wingham Wildlife Park

This term, Year 5 and 6 had a fantastic day at Wingham Wildlife Park! Our inquiry was all about the influence of media on an individual and we had looked specifically at how zoos were portrayed, so we experienced a day at the zoo for ourselves to help us decide whether we agreed with their presence or not. This was an informative and fun day out, learning about various species and also investigating the origin of some of their animals as they had been saved from circuses or used in conservation programmes. Students particularly enjoyed the nocturnal and reptile house, where we got to see three different species of crocodile, bats, armadillos and also five species of snake. Additionally, the play area, which caused us to replicate movements of various animals to find our way through, was also a big hit! All of the children embodied our learner profile attributes for the day, showing how they were principled to the public, being a risk taker in the play area and being reflective about their views.

KS1 Church Visits

KS1 were very lucky to be given a guided tour around St Martins Church in this module. We investigated different special objects such as the font, the candles and the bell. The children were fascinated by why churches have all of these objects and were able to discuss special things that they have in their homes. One child even noted that the ceiling is shaped like Noah's ark! We were very impressed by the observation. Well done KS1.

World Multiple Day

On Wednesday 4th October, we celebrated Multiples Day by dressing up as 'Times Table Rockstars'! We all enjoyed being creative with our outfits to celebrate the importance of mathematics and learning our multiplication facts. Children engaged in multiple activities in the classroom, such as learning common multiples, playing games using their times tables or having an introduction into grouping numbers. In addition to this, lots of TTRS was played across the academy, helping classes to build points towards the 'Battle of the Bands' competition. Well done to Badger class, who were the winning class!

Author Visit

This module, in partnership with Maidstone Literacy Festival, we were very lucky to be visited by children's author, Janelle McCurdy, writer of the children's book series, Mia and the Lightcasters. A gamer and fan of anime, Janelle inspired our children who could really relate to her interests and how her favourite hobbies inspire her to write.  Our pupils engaged in an assembly and workshop with great enthusiasm, understanding how Janelle approaches her writing and even had the chance to create their own umbras that feature in her books. It was a fantastic and invaluable experience for our children and some were even able to have their purchased books signed by the author herself.

This term, in co

Harvest Festival

This term, we celebrated harvest with our traditional harvest assembly. We came together to sing songs and celebrate harvest and to show gratitude for the food we have and the hard work that goes into producing the food we enjoy. We were joined by Reverend Andrew who explained how the congregation at St Martin's Church celebrate harvest. Thank you to Mrs Tulloch who organised the celebration and led the school in fabulous song. Her hard work had certainly paid off as the children in both lower and upper ends of the school sung so beautifully.

Molehill Choir

In September, our new Molehill Choir was launched. Children across KS2 auditioned for a place and we have 20 budding vocalists in our choir, who performed for the first time at the recent Harvest Assembly. They sang ‘A Picture of Autumn’ beautifully and with great skill.

Already, the choir have begun to learn their Christmas repertoire ahead of several performances in the festive season. The first of these will be as part of the Demelza Carolathon at Fremlin Walk on Friday 24th November. The children will be singing from 2:30-3pm and all are welcome to come and listen. Following this, the choir are going to sing for the residents of Ashley Gardens and members of the Maidstone Active Retirement group at St Martin’s Church. The final performance of the year will be as part of the Christingle Service at the end of term.

There will be a chance in January for other KS2 children to audition and join the choir.
