Key Messages

School Dinners

Please pay for school dinners in advance to avoid outstanding balances and debts accumulating over time.

Lost Property

We have a large number of items in our lost property. Please make certain that your child's belongings are correctly labelled.

Deliveries during the Academy day

We have had an increasing number of deliveries to the school office during the school day where pupils have left items at home. This is disruptive to our school day and wastes your time during the day too.  Please ensure that your child arrives at school well-equipped and well-prepared for the day ahead. Providing your child with a checklist of items they need for school will help them to become more independent and will prepare them for a successful adult life.

PYP Inquiry

Little Moles

This term, Little Moles have been looking at how the world works with the central idea that ‘all living things go through a process of change’. The children have been engaged and excited about this topic and it has sent us in all sorts of directions to explore and inquire. The children in Little Moles had a wonderful opportunity to watch chicks hatch from their eggs and get to hold and care for the chicks as they got bigger and began to change. We also watched how caterpillars turn into butterflies as well growing our very own (magic) beans. The children learned what plants need in order to grow. The lifecycles and process of change has brought huge excitement and fantastic learning opportunities for our children in Little Moles. We also hosted a successful Mothers Day Pamper session and enjoyed taking part in new sporting activities such as rugby.

Kangaroo and Wallaby Class

This term we continued with our transdisciplinary theme of 'Where we are in place and time' with the central idea that 'Everyone has their own special place in the world.' We used the book Lunch at 10 Pomegranate Street which tells the story of different residents of a house cooking foods from around the world. It celebrates multiculturalism and brings people together through food. This supported our learning of looking at the uniqueness and value of every person, our similarities and differences between ourselves and others as well as similarities and differences between places and food. We explored all of this through tasting food and cooking different food.

We held a fantastic cultural day where we celebrated our diversity and different cultures. We dressed in our cultural clothes and brought in our favourite food or cultural dishes and shared an exciting feast.  Finally our action this term was that we all collaborated and created a community cookbook for our families that is filled with our favourite cultural recipes.

Leopard Class

This term our transdisciplinary theme has been 'Sharing the planet'. Our central idea was 'People and animals live together in different ways'. The children have shown a great interest in learning about animals; whether it's been about their habitats, what they eat or which animals are the top or bottom of the food chain. The children have been inspired by significant people such as Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough. Leopard class made their own placards to "Save our forest" linked to the story 'Greta and the giants'. The insightful and thoughtful comments that have arisen from this term have been very impressive. Well done for lots of hard work this term and a fantastic understanding and recall of facts throughout our inquiries.

Key Stage One

This term our transdisciplinary theme has been ‘Sharing the planet’ and we have been exploring the central idea - People and animals live together in different ways. The children have enjoyed learning about the animals they share the planet with and the important things all animals need to survive.. The children have spent time out in our forest school area identifying the habitats of local animals and have been able to hunt for minibeasts in their microhabitats. We were also lucky enough to be able to visit the newly hatched chicks in our Little Moles nursery to experience first hand part of the chicken life cycle. The children have learnt about the different groups of animals and were interested to learn the terms carnivore, herbivore and omnivore. The children have been big thinkers this term, demonstrating our learning profile attribute to be principled. They have developed an understanding of climate change and the impact humans are having on the world. All children have contributed to making changes at Molehill including picking up litter, turning off lights and ensuring waste paper goes into our recycling boxes. The children particularly enjoyed learning about the impact Greta Thunberg has had on climate change and produced some lovely pieces of writing linked to a story based on her life. The children have also learnt about endangered animals and it was lovely to hear children discussing the importance of caring for animals during our trip to Howletts Wild Animal Park. The children were incredibly well behaved and we all had a wonderful (if not slightly damp) day seeing the animals.

Lower Key Stage Two

This term, LKS2 have conducted their inquiries under the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works with the central idea 'Curiosity about nature can lead to discoveries'. During the first inquiries, An investigation into natural activities of the world and a comparison of their impact on ancient and modern societies, children researched natural activities such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. In Fox and Badger Classes, pupils compared the impact of the eruptions of Mount Merapi in modern times and Thera in the Ancient Greek era. The children read 'The Firework Maker’s Daughter', which also featured Mount Merapi and wrote some exciting fiction related to this. Children also wrote non-fiction texts about volcanoes and Ancient Greece based on the book, 'A Visitor's Guide to Ancient Greece'. Year 3 linked their science and inquiry (rocks and soils) to the book Pebble in my Pocket and produced some wonderful stories based on this. The final part of the inquiry was to create a portfolio of arts that examine the understanding of the world and its natural disasters. The theme of volcanoes and tsunamis was also used by the children to create exciting poetry and artwork that complemented their fiction writing. The children thoroughly enjoyed this topic and showed sound knowledge while producing work of an impressive standard.

Upper Key Stage Two

This term, UKS2 have been looking at how the world works and specifically how our understanding of the environment has changed as science and technology have advanced. We have continued to learn about the Industrial Revolution and the rapid development in technology at this time. We have also looked at the negative impact that some of this development has had on our planet. We enjoyed learning more about life-cycles in British Science Week investigating the different life-cycles of various animal classifications and even housing tadpoles in our classroom to help with our understanding. We have investigated many writing styles this term, including non-chronological reports on animals, persuasive posters about water consumption and story telling with alternative endings against the usual 'Happy ever after' stereotype.

In Falcon Class this term we have been exploring the theme How the World Works specifically looking at how scientific and technological advancements have impacted on the environment. Through reading and history, the children have investigated the Industrial Revolution, how it started and its impact on Britain including the benefit and drawbacks of various inventions and innovations. Through British Science Week, pupils enjoyed learning about the impacts of farming on the environment, particularly dairy and cattle farming and they considered the benefits and drawbacks of a meat based diet. In science, Falcon Class have focussed their attention on lifecycles and developing their understanding of how lifecycles are similar and different between the different classes of animals: amphibians, insects, reptiles, mammals and birds. Connected to this, in Spanish this term the children have learnt about habitats around the world. Underpinning all of this fantastic work, our pupils have worked incredibly hard at developing their knowledge and confidence in the core areas of maths, reading and grammar in preparation for their SATs in Term 5.

This term, Eagle Class have been looking at how the world works and specifically how our understanding of the environment has changed as science and technology have advanced. We have continued to learn about the Industrial Revolution and the rapid development in technology at this time and have considered the negative impact that some of this development has had on our planet. We enjoyed learning more about the environment in British Science Week, looking at the effect of cows on the environment. We wrote a discussion piece following this, about whether we should eat meat. Eagles have also continued their preparations for the SATs in Term 5 by developing their knowledge and confidence in their key maths, reading and grammar skills. We are really proud of all they have achieved.

Hatching Chicks

Watching our Molehill chicks hatch this module was an incredibly fascinating and memorable occasion. Our whole school community, including any and all visitors to the school, benefited from their first hand experience of life cycles and growth and development. Discussing and holding the chicks encouraged social interaction and promoted caring and nurturing skills. Our wider community were also able to watch the chicks at home and from classrooms through our live stream.

Astronomy Workshop

Earlier this module, we welcomed a travelling astronomy workshop to the academy. Pupils from across the school learnt amazing facts about our solar system and beyond, including taking a flying visit to and learning information about our incredible neighbouring planets. Inside the dome, the entire night sky was projected onto the inside of the dome we could look at the beautiful stars and constellations in our night sky.

Parent Survey

We are absolutely thrilled with the responses to our recent LAT Parental Survey. Parents stated that, 'Communication between teachers and parents is really good and my girls' teachers make me feel like they are their biggest fans especially when they've achieved something. It's a warm feeling to know someone out of the family is just as proud as you are' and that we 'Creates an environment where every child is happy to have been at school for that day, and is missing out if they were absent'.

Not only do we have some fantastic feedback but 100% of parents agree or strongly agree that their child is happy at Molehill and 100% of parents agree or strongly agree that their child is well taught at Molehill!

Mother's Day Afternoon Tea

On the 17th of March Wallaby, Kangaroo and Little Moles classes invited parents in to join them for an afternoon tea and pamper session in celebration of Mother's Day. They immensely enjoyed reading books with their children, having their nails painted; receiving hand-made cards from their children and most importantly, eating cake together! Children across the academy were once again given the opportunity to pick daffodils from our school field to give to their Mums - this has been a tradition at the academy for over 35 years; a previous Principal at the school decided that she would have the bulbs planted to ensure that pupils from across the Shepway estate had flowers to give their mothers on Mothers' Day.

Lego Club with Mrs Grierson

During Term 3 and 4 I have been running a Lego club for Year 1 and 2 children. The club initially started with structure and direction from myself, “I would like you to build the brick house from The 3 Little pigs”... etc. However, through watching the children and listening to their fantastic ideas, the ownership of the club soon switched to them. By the end, we had a typical Lego construction area, with flexibility to be as innovative as the children liked, a Lego colouring area and a playdough area to make imprints of the lego or simply make things to accompany their Lego models. It was a pleasure to chat with the children, listen to their ideas and praise their creations each week. Well done, Lego Club, keep imagining and creating!

Science Week

We utilised Science week to provide additional exposure to science capital outside of the school environment and our Fabulous Finish for this module encouraged parental involvement to facilitate science conversations at home. The overarching theme of the week was how human action connects positively or negatively to each area of science that the children are studying. To start the week, Megan Bell, a chemist from the University of Kent delivered an exceptional assembly to our pupils which invited them to think about the connections between the elements in the periodic table. We were very impressed by our pupils' prior knowledge - reception children described elements as 'fire, earth, air and water' which provoked an interesting discussion about how our understanding of science has developed over time. Year 6 pupils were able to identify some of the elements in the periodic table and gave consideration to the environmental impact that humans have on earth.

World Book Day

For most of us at Molehill, World Book Day is the highlight of the Academic year! We ensure that our pupils develop a love of reading because we know that regular reading provides young people with the chance to increase vocabulary and comprehension skills; challenge their perception of the world around them; and escape into different worlds, times and places. We know that the development of strong literacy skills improves the life chances of our pupils and provides them with the key skills that are vital to adult life. Well done to everyone who embraced World Book Day - we were so impressed with the variety of different outfits and were delighted to immerse ourselves in literature learning for the day.

Easter Celebration

On Wednesday the whole school, staff and children, made our way to the church to join together in  a joyful celebration. We received a warm welcome from Andrew and Esther and it felt very special to join our wider community. During Singing Assemblies this term pupils had been very dedicated and practised their chosen Easter songs. The sound of the children singing was absolutely beautiful  and most importantly we had lots of fun too!

A special thank you to Mrs Tulloch who worked tirelessly to organise such a wonderful event.

We look forward to returning to the church again at Christmas.

Peer Mediators

We are extremely proud of the children who peer mediate at Molehill. These children have been trained to mediate friendship conflicts between fellow pupils and are overseen by Miss Miller. Caroline McInnes from Maidstone Mediation, who trains our children in the Peer Mediator Scheme, visited our team of mediators in this module to see how they were finding the responsibility. We were delighted to report to her that all of our mediators have been extremely conscientious in their role supporting the younger children and also assisting the lunchtime staff. They have dealt with any issues in a responsible and sensitive manner and have proved to be 100% reliable in undertaking their duties. A HUGE thank you to these children for all of their hard work and for their invaluable contribution to our school community. Caroline will be back again in module 6 to train any Year 5 children wanting to take on this role next academic year.

Parent Sessions - Emotional Wellbeing Advisor

Nnamdi, our Emotional Wellbeing Advisor has been offering parent/carer consultations this term about understanding your child's behaviour.  These sessions have helped parents/carers to understand their child’s difficult to manage behaviour and give them strategies to support in different situations. It also included self-regulation strategies for children, discussed parental self-care and recommended helpful books and resources. The consultation also supported parents/carers to recognise and understand their child's anxiety, worries and fears.

We will be happy to share resources if you were unable to attend any of the dates that were offered. Please keep a look out for further parental courses which are sent out via email.
