Units
Basketball
Students will learn the fundamentals of dribbling, shooting, passing, and playing defense. Students will also put these skills to the test during games in class.
Volleyball
In this unit students will learn the fundamentals of volleyball and how the game is played. They will do this in small groups as well as gameplay experience.
Floor Hockey
In this unit the students will gain a basic understanding of the sport of hockey. They will learn how to hold a stick, pass and shoot, and they will learn the different positions.
Fitness (Fitnessgram)
Throughout the year students will be involved with many different fitness activities including the Fitnessgram assessments. Our goal is to teach students that fitness can be fun!
Soccer
In the soccer unit students will learn how the game of soccer is played. They will learn the positions of a team and what each position is used for. They will gain knowledge and experience through various drills and game play.
Mokena Ninja Warrior
This year we are introducing a new unit called Mokena Ninja Warrior. This will be a unit where students will have to use many of the skills they have learned throughout the year to complete an obstacle course!
Wiffleball and Kickball
Whiffleball and kickball are both games that are very similar to baseball. Whiffleball uses a plastic ball and bat and kickball uses a round playground ball. Students will learn the basic rules and positions of both of these games for their end of the year tournaments with their classes.
Bowling
during our bowling unit, students will learn the fundamentals of bowling and how to score it. They will also learn muscles that are used when they bowl and how bowling in school can be a fun and entertaining workout.
Handball
Handball is a fast paced game that gets the students moving throughout the playing field. They need to complete passes quickly and effectively in order to be able to score points in this game.
Flickerball
This is a unique game that many students may never have heard of before. The unit will teach students how to throw the ball, score points, and what each position on the field does. This is a very exciting and fast paced game!
D.A.R.E.
Mokena Intermediate School partners with the Mokena Police to give our fifth grade students education on drugs, alcohol, and other pressures they may have growing up.
Jump Rope
In this units, students will learn how to jump rope. They will learn how to jump forwards, backwards, and how to jump long rope.
Team Building and Rhythms
Throughout the school year students will participate in activities that work their team building and communication skills. We will also incorporate a rhythms and dance unit.
Human Body Systems
During the year students will learn the different muscle groups and muscles that are used to do exercises. They will have a very basic knowledge of the human body and how it moves.
