Dungeons & Dragons Club began in 2022 when a small band of players asked to start a new club. I was expecting we'd have maybe a half dozen participants; instead 28 heroes and heroines answered the call to adventure. Meeting on Fridays, our Meteorum questers conquered goblins, survived car crashes, fought in arenas, found gold ... and sandwiches.
Who knows what awaits in the future?
Character Building: The club begins with players developing a character who will be their avatar in the game. Dungeons and Dragons guidelines and resources help as players select their species (human, dwarf, elf, troll, etc.), their profession (wizard, fighter, thief, healer, etc.) and discover their skills. Don't know how to do this? That's okay. We'll show you.
Campaigning: Players will be divided into questing parties (groups) and handed over to a DM (Dungeon Master) who will guide the story. The DM sets the scene, introduces the goal of the quest, and describes the various entities players can interact with. Taking turns, each player is faced with choices as the story progresses -- explore, unlock, fight, talk, and so on. Along the way, players gain experience which leads to better skills and gp (gold points) to "buy" new gear. Throughout, you play along with the story as if in a video game or movie--without the screen.
No equipment or experience is necessary.
Some players buy their own dice sets, but you don't need to. We have enough for everyone.
There are countless books and online resources to fill you in on the rules and possibilities in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, but you don't need to get anything to play with us. Just come with your imagination and an open mind -- things are liable to get weird when junior high students are telling stories.
From 4th grade through my senior year of high school, I had an annual tradition of rereading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. When not flipping pages of my worn paperbacks, I spent a ridiculous number of hours on a Commodore 64 computer playing The Bard's Tale and Phantasie, hunting treasure and orcs with my wizard Scythe and my warrior troll, Graug. I never had a chance to actually play the real Dungeons & Dragons back then.
Since the 1980s, I have played countless role-playing video games, watched many sword-n-sorcery films, and have been to the Renaissance Faire in Bristol, Wisconsin, several times. As a writer, this is my genre. For my Write Club, I have penned a sword-slinger trilogy and a re-telling of the Arthurian legends.
Despite buying my first twenty-sided die for this club, I am steeped in the world of dragons and ogres. To guide others into this make believe world of adventure has been and will continue to be a thrill. Here, everyone belongs and here everyone can be a hero. Huzzah!
