Impact on you and the community
I didn't know much about e-commerce scams at first because I don't do online shopping. I didn't put much thought into it as I didn't think it would be a very serious problem. But after researching on this topic, I found out that we can actually lose quite a huge sum of money through e-commerce scams. Other than that, if we are not careful we might even risk getting our personal details leaked. After gaining the opportunity to learn more about e-commerce scams, I can now shop safely and responsibly. After researching, it allowed me to understand how dangerous e-commerce scams can be and the actions we can take to prevent e-commerce scams from happening. Some actions include buying from credible sellers. With this knowledge, I can now protect my family, my friends, and myself from online scams.
What are the challenges/difficulties of this project?
A difficulty that we faced was the choice of ideas to incorporate, as we each have our point of view. Everyone hoped that we could do our best in the presentation so we were keen to share our own ideas. Some may feel that others' point is not necessary thus we had a hard time deciding what information should be included in our presentation. But our motive is the same, so we were able to come to an agreement in the end.Through this, i have learnt that communication skills are very important and our project would not have been successful if we couldn't converse properly. After this presentation, I have also learned to be more confident when I talk. I needed to present in front of more than 20 people and the majority of them were strangers to me. Before this, I lacked the confidence to talk in front of people who I already knew, so through this I had learned to step out of my comfort zone and communicate with others.
What NPCC values have we demonstrated during this project? How else can we demonstrate these values in our lives?
Some NPCC values we have demonstrated during this project was commitment. The preparation of this project had started since July and we only stopped for a break right before our End Of Year Examination. My group and I will always call whenever we are free. Despite having homework and other assignments, we are still able to squeeze out some time to discuss at least twice a week. Despite meeting so many challenges, we didn't give up and we took the initiative to ask other sirs and ma'am questions to quell our doubts. Another NPCC value is responsibility. We were responsible for meeting our deadline and ensuring that we could submit our draft before the deadline. We also made sure that every time we called we would focus on our agenda and not be disturbed by other things. We also made sure that at the end of the presentation, the audience is able to learn something new, which would make it a worthwhile experience for them. I can incorporate responsibility into my daily life. For example, English is one of the weakest subjects. One action that I took to improve my English is by doing an assessment book everyday. Even though I failed my EYE, that did not make me feel discouraged but this will instead make me work harder. I am the vice chairperson of my class and also an EXCO member, this indeed brings me a lot of stress. Even though there are a lot of tasks to be done, I will be responsible for finishing all tasks given.
Impact on you and the community
Through this project, I have become more aware about E-commerce scams and the dangers they bring. I realised that the internet is much more dangerous than it looks after researching more about such scams, I started developing habits such as taking note whether the website is secure and verifying the authenticity of the product before buying. I learnt that while the internet can be useful in many ways, it also brings along its fair share of dangers, We must always be vigilant and ensure that we stay safe from being scammed online.
What are the challenges/difficulties of this project?
During the project, we faced some difficulties, one of them being using incorrect information. We did not realise that the information we were using were incorrect until towards the end of the project. After we went through the first round of vetting, we corrected the information and learnt how to check for the validity of sources. Another issue was, during the preparation of our script and slides, we had different perspectives and it was difficult to include all our views in the presentation as our ideas were very different. We shared our point of views and researched more before including the information in our project. Overall, we tried to include everyone’s ideas while respecting each other’s opinions and teaching one another.
What NPCC values have we demonstrated during this project? How else can we demonstrate these values in our lives?
I feel that my group and I have demonstrated the values of resilience and resourcefulness. Towards the date of presentation and after the first round of vetting. We realised that the information we were using in our slides were incorrect and that they can be improved. My group and I quickly made edits to the our presentation and scripts according to advice given to us by our Sirs and Ma’ams. One example is adding interactives so that our audience will feel more included. A lot of changes had to be made to our script as we changed the information we were using in the slides. However, we did not give up despite the large workload and eventually we completed our presentation and scripts to our best ability. I can demonstrate resilience and resourcefulness in my daily life when I face roadblocks that seem impossible to cross. There are times where we might feel that the workload might be unbearable but by not giving up and pushing on, we will be able to overcome the problem with resilience. However, resilience might not be enough on its own, so we can incorporate the value of resourcefulness. Whenever we face any issues, we must have the attitude to quickly find solutions to adapt and overcome them. For example, when you feel that you are unable to cope handling both CCA and your academics. Instead of giving up and ignoring my responsibilities, I would make changes to my daily schedule and plan out my time more efficiently such that I have a balance between my work and personal life.
Impact on you and the community
I have learned that there are many signs of E-commerce scams that we are unaware of and how easily people can fall for it. One of the E-Commerce Scams such as selling an item on the market at a low price when they are usually sold at a higher price, and ways to prevent ourselves from e-commerce scams. This has also benefited the community as they are usually unaware of the signs of E-commerce scams. So, this spreads awareness not only to the community but also ourselves about E-commerce scams and how they can be avoided.
What were some challenges we faced, and how did we overcome them?
Some of the challenges we faced are communication and researching the wrong information for our projects. We faced a communication problem as all of us have a different point of view towards E-commerce scams and often argued about it. So, we overcame this challenge by seeking help from the TOs, and they gave us some advice and opinions to overcome this challenge, and we succeeded. Another challenge we faced is researching the wrong information for our project. After we did our first draft of the slides, our TOs commented that our research did not match our topic with E-commerce scams. We then quickly asked for advice for TOs on what is wrong and how to learn from our mistakes.
What NPCC values have we demonstrated during this project? How else can we demonstrate these values in our life?
We have demonstrated Commitment and Discipline during this project. We have shown commitment to our project by discussing the project everyday, making sure that it is up to the TOs expectations and making use of our time management skills to not only discuss the project, but also juggling our studies at the same time. This shows that we are committed to do our best for the project and are committed to put in our best effort to ensure that this project will be a successful one. One daily life example is during Secondary 2, I have been failing Mathematics. So, my math teacher tried to encourage me to do better and asked me to be committed to your goal, which is passing Mathematics. I was committed by doing assessment books and practice papers to help improve the subject. In the end, I passed my Mathematics exam.
Another value we demonstrated during the project is Discipline. Instead of slacking off, We tried to be on task during our discussions as we wanted to give our very best and achieve our desired outcome. So, we set up a specific call time everyday to discuss our PYA project and tend to remind each other to stay on task. This shows that we are disciplined enough to do the task we are assigned to do.
Impact on you and the community
We learnt how to communicate effectively with one another and look at each other's perspective. During the discussion phase of the project, all of us had different ideas that we wanted to include, and had heated discussions on it. Regardless of our opinions, we were still able to put aside our judgement and listen to each other. By doing so, we learnt how to put aside our differences and not be stubborn to find the best option that could incorporate our ideas.
What were some challenges we faced, and how did we overcome them?
There were many challenges throughout the entire duration of the PYA project, but one of the most prominent challenges would be figuring out how to engage the audience. It's not difficult to create a set of slides with relevant information and just follow a script, but engaging the audience and making sure they don't get bored from listening to us talk is definitely much harder. During our first draft, we had focused on including the correct information and ensuring the slides weren't too wordy, but our dry run had shown us that it still resulted in a boring and one sided presentation. Only after our 2nd draft did we get help from our TO and found some ways to engage our audience, by asking them which product they would rather purchase and go from there. This has resulted in the audience actually engaging with us during the presentation, and helps us know that the audience is actually paying attention and gaining knowledge.
What NPCC values have we demonstrated during this project? How can we demonstrate these values in our lives?
A NPCC value we demonstrated during this project is responsibility. By being responsible, all of us were able to meet deadlines for our project, and had taken action by calling each other and discussing our ideas. Only by understanding that we are also responsible for the audience, were we able to produce a proper presentation with proper information included that would not mislead the audience and provide them with a fruitful learning experience. We can demonstrate responsibility in our lives by applying it to our school/work. Being aware that we are responsible for both ourselves and how we affect others will help us to continuously think about our words and actions, and help come up with the best method of action for everyone.
Impact on you and the community
I have learnt many things from the PYA project, the most important one being time management. When we were preparing for the presentation, it was during the End of Year Exam period. We had to make sure we got enough revision for the papers and at the same time, finishing the project that was assigned to us. This helped me improve my time management skill as I need to make sure I can maintain my results and at the same time, find time to do the project with my group mates. Having this skill can help me a lot in the future as I will not be wasting as much time as I would have before I improve on my time management. This allows me to have more time to accomplish more things like studying, spending time with my family and friends, and doing things that I like.
What are the challenges/difficulties of this project?
When we were doing preparations for the project, we also came across many challenges, a few of them being the amount of time we can spend together to do the project and finish it due to other commitments that many of us have such as studies. Furthermore, we had to find a timing that everyone was free for all of us to gather and complete the project. We had to make sure that our results will not deprove too while being up to task and doing our revision alongside with this project. This have taught me a valuable lesson to be responsible for our commitments and managing our time properly. It also taught me teamwork is very important and plays a big part in getting things done together. We look out for each other mistakes and correct one another when a mistake is spotted. Another challenge that we faced is finding the right timing for us to gather and do the project as many of our schedules did not match up with one another. This forced us to make sure that we are on task whenever we have a meeting so that we do not waste time and end up needing more time to complete the project.
What NPCC values have we demonstrated during this project? How else can we demonstrate these values in our lives?
Some NPCC values that we have demonstrated while doing this project are commitment and initiative. When we were doing the project, we and my group mates had to take the initiative to find time in our busy schedule and gather to get the work done. While doing this, we also had to make sure when we start the meeting, we will be productive and working on the project until we have other things that we had to do. These values can be demonstrated in our daily life by simply submitting homework on time or taking the initiative to ask the teacher to teach the things that you do not understand. It can also be seen when a person start learning a new set of skills and stick to it until the end, after learning finish all the things there are to be taught.
What have you learnt from this project?
1). From this project, I have learnt what E-Commerce scams are, learnt how to prevent myself from becoming a victim of E-Commerce scams using methods such as “being sceptical of any incredulous promises and deals that are simply too good to be true”. As offers like these are mostly untrue and will often lead people into falling for this kind of trickery. An example of this is me and my friend buying pokemon cards in which we found out they were fake only after spending around $20 on them. At the time they were only $2 per packet. Therefore both him and I included have not bought anything online until we attended this session. In which we learnt of what went wrong when we bought those knock-off cards online and what we should do in order to not fall for these kinds of tricks again.
How has this project helped the community?
2). This project has and will help the community in unimaginable ways. In the past, I myself have seen far too many people falling for these scams and losing a lot more than my friend and I have lost. We only lost about $20 bucks. However others have lost hundreds maybe even thousands to these kinds of scams. With this project, the community need not worry about losing their hard earned money to these kinds of scams anymore because, this project educates them about how these people can trick others into falling for their traps and teaches them effective countermeasures to ensure that they do not fall for these scams again.
If not, how else can we improve on this project?
3). This project can be improved by making it such that it caters to a wider scaled audience. It can be like programmes in a community centre in which you sign up to listen to some people presenting about E-Commerce scams. It can also be presented at schools for assembly programmes so that the students in the school will also be educated about these kinds of scams. By doing this, not only does it help to raise awareness about these kinds of scams, but at a larger scale which helps to improve this project’s effectiveness at educating people about E-Commerce scams.
