Dr Victor Lim and Dr Lydia Tan-Chia from the NIE and Professor Oystein Gilje from the University of Oslo, Norway visited Senior Teacher of English Language, Ms Grace Ng's classroom on 3 February 2023. The Sec Ones were very much their animated selves and actively engaged with their teacher and classmates on process writing. Thereafter, the English Language department teachers were treated to Professor Oystein Gilje's sharing on one of his research interests on One-on-One Computing. It was such a rewarding international exchange for the department and an exciting day for the young students!
The National Organ Transplant Unit (MOH) conducted an interactive sharing session on organ transplant and organ donation on 1 February for our S2E students during the CCE periods.
The students gained insights on the complex decision-making, delicate and emotive nature of organ donation and transplantation.
They proceeded to participate in the essay writing competition in the Live On Festival 2023 which they further explored contemporary issues pertaining to organ donation and transplantation on a national and global scale.
With this sharing, we hope the students will learn the values of responsibility, compassion and empathy.
Jaiaree Rattawit of Sec 2/3 did the school proud and won the Special Mention Award for the Essay Competition. It is a commendable feat to emerge as one of the winners among 111 participating schools and 2136 essays submitted.

Literature Drama Appreciation
Learning Journey
On 17 April 2023, three Secondary 1 classes embarked on a Literature Drama Appreciation Learning Journey to Act 3 International.
They watched a riveting theatre adaptation of The Jungle Book and took part in an engaging post-performance Q&A session with the actors.
The students asked questions such as, ‘What happens if you make a mistake during the performance?’ and, ‘How long does it take for you to memorise your lines?’, showing their curiosity about the level of effort and craft required for theatre performances.
Later, they took part in a hands-on workshop where they acted as characters from The Jungle Book and created tableaux (freeze frames) to showcase theatre dynamics. All in all, our students certainly came away with fond memories from seeing Literature alive in the drama world, and having fun with their friends
Mathematics
Mathematics Trail
Our Secondary 1 Outramians had an engaging and fun learning experience during the Mathematics Trail held within the school on 2nd March.
As learning beyond the classroom is essential for Outramians to apply mathematical concepts, our creative Mathematics teachers have designed authentic tasks such as estimating the maximum capacity in the school canteen, computing the average speed of a moving toy car, making assumptions, calculating the vertical height of a building using a clinometer app, and measuring students’ heights by simply using a metre ruler.
Working as a team and putting all their thinking caps together, our Secondary 1 Outramians certainly deepened their understanding of how to solve authentic mathematical problems.
There is indeed nothing more important than experiencing the Joy of Learning while studying Mathematics!
Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight
The Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight is an annual two-week programme that gives Outramians the opportunity to learn and appreciate their Mother Tongue Languages and Cultures through a myriad of activities.
This year, the Malay Language Unit based their activities on the theme, "Gastronomy of Malay Traditional Food". Students of Malay Language had immersive lessons where they learnt about traditional food such as "Pulut Kuning" (Yellow Glutinous Rice) and "Lepat Pisang" (steamed banana parcel).
They also had the chance to experience communal dining as they sat in groups on the traditional synthetic straw mat or also called, "tikar", and shared a meal from the same platter.
Staff and students also enjoyed many other exciting and enriching activities. For Chinese language related activities, there was Tea Appreciation (茶艺), Musical Appreciation (音乐喜剧《都是当兵惹的祸》) and Traditional Games(射箭,孔明锁,扯铃).
For the Tamil Language related activities, there was a colourful mix of activities like henna painting, Putu Mayam (rice flour noodle) making and tasting, and Dandiya (Indian stick dance).
STEM Playground – Satay Stick Challenge 2023
Outramians had a joyful learning experience as they took on the STEM Playground Challenge hosted by Singapore Science Centre and James Dyson Foundation in March 2023.
The challenge was for the students to create a bridge that can support at least 1kg load. The students were given 50 satay sticks and tape.
The construction of the bridges progressed quickly as our budding innovators became more proficient in coming up with creative ideas to build impressive bridges.
We are proud that the students demonstrated positive learning attitude towards building the bridge, experimenting on different designs and working on multiple iterations to see which design works best to support the different types of weight.
The experience has brought about much meaning that science, technology, engineering and mathematics exist in our daily lives.
AeroBot Challenge
Flying drones is no easy feat but a group of Outramians had the courage and positive learning attitude to give it a go.
Three teams of Sec 3 Design & Technology students represented the school at Ngee Ann Poly's AeroBot Challenge. The students had to remotely control a vehicle carrying a payload, to a specific designation. Once that was done, they had to fly a drone to pick up the payload from the vehicle and drop it onto a target map before landing the drone safely.
Bravo to the students who experienced a steep learning curve
Our Sec two students took a trip back in time during their Learning Journey to the National Museum on 8th and 9th May.
During their experience, the students listened to stories by the museum educators about artefacts from Singapore's past.
