PHOTO REFLECTIONS AFTER LEARNING JOURNEYS WITH HDB AND LTA

CPDD Geography Unit organised two learning journeys with Housing Development Board (HDB) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) early this year to allow teachers to explore potential sites for Lower Secondary Geography Geographical Investigation (G.I.).

The HDB learning journey on 18 January 2022 included a visit to the neighbourhood of Punggol and opportunities for discussion with HDB and other participants. This allowed participants to develop a deeper understanding of neighbourhoods as field sites for Housing G.I.

On 8 February 2022, participants visited the Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub (ITH) on the learning journey with LTA in order to explore how it can be a potential site for Transport G.I. Participants had to identify and discuss sustainable, inter-generational, and special needs features found at the ITH.

We invited participants to share with us some of their reflections, together with a photograph captured during the learning journey.

"I was honestly surprised by the level of thought and actions taken to improve the experience of various groups using the Integrated Transport Hub (ITH). Some of these features are things I’ve seen but never paid much attention to.

There is much potential for the area to be studied, and I would be interested in getting students to view these places from a more geographical lens. So in this picture, it is not only about helping those who need assistance, but it is also helping them see from a fresh perspective."

"LTA has come up with a concept for integrated transport hubs (ITH) to increase the ease and accessibility of transport amenities for commuters. They have included visual and physical features such as colour coded pictograms to guide commuters to their destinations. Increasing interconnectivity also increased the motivation for people to take public transport to get to different places.

The use of LED lights contributed to energy savings and is aligned with the sustainability concept. Our students will be interested to identify the different features at the new ITH."

"Inclusivity. The actions taken by LTA to include people with special needs is definitely to be applauded. This inclusion definitely makes everyone to feel belonged and not treated differently just because they are handicapped or elderly. It is heartening to note such efforts are becoming common at every part of the country.

I do have concerns for elderly who are independent yet slower and weaker with low visual ability as this integrated hub can be overwhelming due to its different layers and size. However, I do see the importance of orienteering them so as to slowly assimilate them to the new changes."
