Our Canberrans have arrived safely in Vietnam! After the iconic group picture at Changi Airport Terminal 2 this morning, the group departed Singapore - ready to explore Vietnamese culture and history! ๐ธ๐ฌโ๏ธ๐ป๐ณ
REUNIFICATION PALACE ๐ป๐ณ
The first stop in Ho Chi Minh City! Once known as Norodom Palace, this building witnessed one of Vietnam's biggest turning points โ on 30 April 1975, tanks rolled through its gates, marking the end of the Vietnam War and the reunification of North and South Vietnam.
The group explored important rooms like the Conference Hall, where South Vietnamese presidents were sworn in, and the National Security Council Chamber, where key national decisions were made. Each space was designed to reflect the grandeur and solemnity of the events that took place โ from elegant furnishings to symbolic design details.
Our Canberrans also visited the presidential quarters, once home to the South Vietnamese president and his family, and the underground bunker directly connected to the president's office. Built as a refuge during bombings, it houses a maze of tunnels and is equipped with communication systems like switchboards and transmitters, all meant for emergency use in times of war.
The palace itself blends modern architecture with layers of diplomacy and symbolism, capturing both Eastern and Western influences. It was also here that Saigon officially became Ho Chi Minh City, marking a new chapter in Vietnam's story.
Did you know? The five points of the yellow star on Vietnam's flag represent intellectuals, farmers, workers, traders and soldiers โ symbolising how every group plays a part in building the nation. โญ
SAIGON POST OFFICE ๐ฎ / BOOK STREET ๐
The team explored the iconic Saigon Central Post Office, a stunning example of French colonial architecture in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. The building's grand arched ceilings, intricate tilework and historic charm offered a glimpse into Vietnam's architectural heritage.
Just nearby, our Canberrans wandered through Book Street, a pedestrian street lined with bookshops and literary culture. The vibrant atmosphere and creative displays made it a perfect stop to witness the local life and perhaps pick up a souvenir or two.
FOOD IS CULTURE ๐ด
Lunch: Phแป & Seafood Spring Roll
Dinner: Chicken bรกnh mรฌ
No overseas trip is complete without the most important cultural exchange โ food! Our Canberrans got to try phแป, Vietnam's famous noodle soup, available in either chicken or beef. They also had crispy spring rolls, and of course, the iconic bรกnh mรฌ. Every bite today was full of flavour and tradition, giving our Canberrans a real taste of Vietnamese culture. ๐๐ฅ
