Device and Hardware Issues

4. Can I purchase my own device for my child to use in school?

  • For students to use the device in school, they need to install the DMA (device management application) which allows us to control access and deploy learning materials in class.

  • For our school, we are using ChromeBook. If you would like to use your own device, please ensure that the device is a Chromebook with a stylus, fitted with 4GB RAM and 64 GB disk space.

  • As our school is using ChromeOS, our DMA cannot be installed on Windows or iPadOS.

5. Can my child use his/her personal Windows laptop or iPad during the lesson?

  • As stated in Paragraph 6, the DMA allows the teacher to control the students’ use of computing device during class time.

  • As our school is using ChromeOS, our DMA cannot be installed on Windows or iPadOS. Your child/ward will not be able to use his/her computing device in school.

6. Do we need to return the device after my child has graduated?

      • The school will not be collecting the device back as the device belongs to your child. Upon graduation, the DMA will also be uninstalled.

7. The ChromeBooks look the same. Can my child decorate their ChromeBook?

  • We will be getting the students to personalize their ChromeBooks. Your child will be allowed to decorate his or her ChromeBook, with appropriate materials.

8. What if a stylus is misplaced or stolen or lost?

  • You can purchase a replacement set at your own cost. Lenovo has created a site for parents who has purchased the device under this program and you can purchase accessories through it. More information on this will be given to parents during the device collection.

9. Will the school be able to lend a device to my child if his device is under repair?

      • Yes. While waiting for the device to be repaired, the school will loan a device to your child, so as to ensure continuity in learning and that learning is not compromised.

Device Management Application (DMA)

10. Will the school be teaching parents how to use and install the DMA?

  • Online tutorials and resources will be shared with parents once the information is available. You can check back on this website for more details.

Software and Updates

11. Do students have to pay for the upgrades in device software? How will it be done?

  • Chrome OS upgrades happen automatically and quietly in the background once it is connected to the internet. Software updates on Chrome OS are delivered multiple times a month — and since they're sent to all devices directly from Google, thus no need for administrators to be involved in the rollout process.

12. Will students have access to Microsoft 365?

  • To support the development of digital literacy, MOE will be rolling out the following applications in the Personal Learning Devices in early 2021: Google Suite for Education, Microsoft Office productivity suite which includes only Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote & Publisher and Zoom. It does not include the whole suite from Microsoft 365.

Locker and Storage

13. Will my child be able to store their device in school overnight?

  • Students are expected to secure their devices in the lockers when they are not using the device. They are not allowed to store their device overnight as they are expected to bring their devices home to charge.

14. My child already has a locker. Can we use that locker to store that device instead of the PLD lockers in class? Can we store our personal items in the PLD lockers?

  • The PLD lockers are located in your child’s classroom. This is convenient for students and teachers when the PLD is needed to be used during lessons.

  • The PLD lockers are used to store only students’ PLDs, and students are not allowed to store personal items. Students are also expected to clear the lockers every day and bring their devices home to charge.

15. What lock should we use for the PLD locker?

  • The exact type of lock and its specifications will be shared with parents once it is ready.
