from Strong foundation in concepts to pictorial to abstract (CPA)

In the lower primary, students learn basic concepts of fractions.

With a strong conceptual understanding of fractions, students will then be able to proceed to visualizing it in a pictorial form (drawings or bar models).

The short teaching videos below illustrate how concepts of fractions (part whole) are applied to compare unit and unlike fractions in pictorial form and using different methods.

HYBRID Model Drawing

P4 Model Drawing.mp4

In the lower primary, students learn 3 types of models:

This short video showcases how these 3 types of models can be combined when solving more advanced questions at the upper primary.

 Heuristics

Working Backward

This is a useful heuristic to solve questions whereby the final value is known and the initial value  is unknown.

Look for a Pattern

Looking for a pattern is a useful skill to have when problem solving. Patterns enable us to make generalisations.

Restate the Problem

Restating the problem is a useful skill as it allows the students to view the problem from a different perspective.

Unitary Model

The unitay model is useful when phrases such as " x times as many as" is involved. This example involves the unitary method as well as  the "before and after" concept.

 ADvanCEd MODEL DRAWING AND BRANCHING

This video explores different ways of drawing models (with and without the need for sub-division).

It also introduces the branching method which is an alternative to model drawing

 DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIONS OF QUANTITIES

This video explores how quantities can be expressed in different ways such as fraction, ratio and percentage.

This will enable students to be versatile when working on problem sums.
