Jesmine Tan joined the Ministry of Education as a mid-career officer. Previously working as a Systems Development Manager, she was in charge of designing and developing Enterprise Resource Planning software that aimed to enhance the operational functions and finalization of financial statements for SMEs and MNCs.
Upon joining the educational scene, her past experience with system design and computational design added value to the organization's needs. She capitalized upon her strength to bring effectiveness to the teaching and learning process, including the administrative operations. During her seven years with Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, she enhanced various administrative processes, incubated and initiated innovative pedagogical approaches with her exuberance of knowledge and plenitude of ideas, specifically in the area of harnessing ICT for teaching and learning. Since 2010, she has presented papers at international conferences; shared at the national and cluster levels; conducted workshops at the Academy of Singapore Teachers; and headed training sessions and workshops for teachers’ professional development at the school, cluster, and at the national level. In 2015, she received the Inspiring Chinese Language Teacher Award (National). She believes that with the rapid advancement of technology, the malleability and potential of using information and communications technology (ICT) to evolve the delivery of 21st-century education is a growing potential, not just for students but in teacher education as well.
In 2017, Jesmine was seconded to the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NIE, NTU), Singapore. Her teaching focuses on the effective use of technology for teaching and learning the Chinese language, targeting the local mainstream schools, and teaching Chinese as an international language. Her area of expertise is not limited to the pedagogical design for language learning but includes the overarching instructional design for Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL). Her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with the Learning Sciences and Assessment academic group at the NIE, NTU, was on collaborative knowledge improvement in a CSCL environment. During her years in the NIE, NTU, she was recognized for her expertise and contribution to the Learning Sciences and CSCL communities and was invited as a reviewer for several journals and international conferences.
In 2022, she returned to the mainstream school to assume her role as a School Staff Developer. With a mindset of a researcher, she believes that anyone can learn and improve through continuous capacity building, both for teachers and students.
