The theme for 2022’s Total Defence campaign – “Together We Keep Singapore Strong” – focuses on the many ways we can put Total Defence into action in our everyday lives.
On 15 February 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese. We mark Total Defence Day on 15 February every year as a reminder of what could happen to us if we cannot defend Singapore ourselves, and to strengthen our resolve to keep Singapore safe, secure, and sovereign.
Singapore is facing a wider range of challenges and threats. They are complex and multi-faceted. They are also increasingly targeted at hearts and minds, aimed at breaking social unity and unsettling commitment to the nation. It is crucial for us to step up and play our part to strengthen our unity, resilience, and resolve in the face of these challenges and threats.
Welcome fellow NE Advocates. I am Selinna your President for NE Advocate Commitee. With me are my fellow excos. Do look out for us in school!

Common Spaces, Connected Communities
This day is celebrated in Singapore to honor its racial harmony and secularism, with a majority of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian citizens. Every year on July 21st, schools and grassroots organizations, including religious groups, organize activities. The event commemorates the race riots of July 21, 1964, when Singapore was still a state of Malaysia (1963–1965), which claimed 22 lives and injured hundreds. The 1950s and 1960s saw numerous other communal riots and incidents leading up to Singapore's independence in August 1965.
With globalisation and technology closing the distance between people and places, our youths will increasingly be exposed to different life experiences and reference points that shape their views on issues of race and religion. As we work towards strengthening our collective sense of belonging, we must recognise that candid and heartfelt conversations on diverse cultures and multicultural communities can enrich our lives if they are conducted respectfully and sensitively. By reflecting on their experiences and engaging in respectful conversations, both online and offline, our youths can play a part to protect the common space, strengthen trust and friendships among the communities, in order to emerge stronger as a more caring, cohesive and resilient nation.
On 17th March 2021, our NE Excos Selinna, Lezann and Rosfaidah facilitated a discussion on racial issues in Singapore with over 100 students. Organized by OnePeople.Sg and Nanyang Girls High School, the students openly discussed social issues affecting our youth.

On behalf of the Founders’ Memorial team from the National Library Broad, do download this annual, free-of-charge journal on Singapore’s post-independence history and society, as part of building public interest in and ownership of our post-independence history, and to contribute to thought leadership in this area.
Each issue of the journal will take on a different theme and explore different facets of how post-independent history is interpreted, represented and remembered. It will also look at the ethos of modern Singapore as shaped by its founding history, exploring the relationship between national policy and lived experiences through visual culture, artefacts from the National Collection, and personal stories.
The first issue explores the theme of ‘Home’ and the various ways it can be understood in Singapore
Our NE advocates collaborated with the Environment advocates for a joint activity on March 16th. Our fellow Hillgrovian Alumni, Rio and Shafiee, gave a presentation on Event Management at the end of the event.
All Secondary 2 students will get a set of the GOTC II card game to learn about Total Defence in a fun and engaging way. Click here to watch an instructional video on how to play the game, supporting education resources and post-game facilitation ideas
