1. What is Home-Based Learning (HBL) and why is it necessary ?
Home-Based Learning (HBL) is a plan to help students learn from home. It can comprise different modes of learning, such as e-learning with computing devices and/or offline work like reading textbooks, completing workbooks and worksheets. There is a range, depending on the nature of the subject and the needs of the students. Students are to complete the work assigned at home and not in school.
HBL allows for the continuity of learning in the event of school closure (eg. national emergencies, severe haze conditions) over a continuous period of time.
2. What are the online portal used to carry out HBL?
The school mainly uses the Student Learning Space (SLS) (https://vle.learning.moe.edu.sg/) for HBL.
3. Do I need a computing device and/or internet access for HBL?
Please contact the school if your child does not have the necessary digital resources, e.g. computer and internet access, to support your child’s HBL
4. Does my child need to stay on the computer for the whole day for online learning?
No. A typical HBL can consist of online learning (e.g. on SLS) for not more than 2 hours a day and offline learning (e.g. refer to textbooks and worksheets) for a total of a maximum of 4 hours a day.
In managing screen time, students can follow the “20-20-20” rule recommended by the Singapore National Eye Centre to encourage students to look at something at least 20 meters away for 20 seconds after 20 minutes of screen time or work.
5. Is my child expected to complete his/her work during the HBL period?
Students are encouraged to complete their learning tasks on the same day so they can keep up with their work on a daily basis.
6. What should I do if I do not have alternative care arrangements for my child?
Please contact the school if you are unable to make alternative care arrangements.
7. My child is experiencing some problems accessing SLS. What can I do?
