Introduction/Overview
Design & Technology (D&T) is a subject that encourages students to identify and respond to design needs arising from real-world experiences. Through research, exploration, idea generation and development, students learn to transform their ideas into meaningful design solutions through hands-on projects.
The subject adopts an iterative design process, where students continuously explore, evaluate and refine their ideas. This encourages students to approach real-world situations as design problems and develop solutions that can improve the quality of life.
Students will explore the following stages of the design process:
Explore and Research – Investigate authentic real-world situations and identify design needs or opportunities.
Ideation – Use sketching to explore a range of ideas, communicate possibilities, and narrow down ideas towards a suitable solution.
Develop – Refine and develop ideas into a feasible design solution, considering the needs and requirements identified.
Prototype – Create and test prototypes to evaluate the design solution, identify areas for improvement and refine the final outcome.

The Lower Secondary Design & Technology (D&T) programme is offered as a modular subject alongside Food and Consumer Education (FCE). Secondary One students take D&T in Semester 1, while Secondary Two students take D&T in Semester 2.
During their D&T module, students complete individual design-and-make projects that develop their creativity, design thinking and practical making skills. The design process is guided by teachers, while students are given the autonomy to explore ideas, make decisions and develop their own solutions.
As part of their project work, students also participate in internal school competitions that recognise their effort, creativity and originality in design. These opportunities allow students to showcase their work and celebrate their achievements in the design process.
