Direct School Admission

The DSA-Sec Exercise was introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2004 to promote holistic education and provide students an opportunity to demonstrate a more diverse range of achievements and talents in seeking admission to a secondary school.  Under this DSA-Sec Exercise, participating schools will be able to select some Primary Six (P6) students for admission to Secondary One. School Vision

Our vision is “Every Merahan a resilient, caring and self-directed learner”. We believe that the sporting arena provides an authentic learning experience for our students to develop the values of Resilience, Integrity, Self-Discipline and Empathy as envisioned by our school.

Learning For Life Programme (LLP) - Character Development Through Sports

The future of Singapore is being shaped by key driving forces such as globalization, changing demographics in society, and technological advancements, which have been hastened by the Covid-19 pandemic. These challenges are volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, and our Merahans must be prepared to face them and adapt where necessary.

To equip our Merahans with a steadfast moral compass in this dynamic world, Bukit Merah Secondary School (BMSS) has developed the Learning For Life Programme (LLP) which focuses on Character Development through Sports. This programme aims to develop in our students, the school values of Respect, Integrity, Self-Discipline, and Empathy.

Through the LLP Programme, students will have multiple platforms to develop and enact these core values through authentic learning experiences within the sporting context. This will enable them to apply these values in realistic and real-world situations.

For students who are passionate about pursuing Sports-related excellence, BMSS offers an exciting opportunity for them to join the Sports CCAs (Basketball, Floorball & Tchoukball) through the Direct School Admission (DSA) programme. These Sports CCAs provide students with a wide range of opportunities to develop both their character and sporting competencies such as teamwork through the National School Games, external competitions, and outreach programmes.

At BMSS, we firmly believe that our LLP programme and Sports CCAs offer a holistic platform for students enrolled via DSA (Sports) to develop their sportsmanship, hone their skills, and achieve their potential in the sporting domains.

Achieving Sporting Excellence through Floorball CCA

Bukit Merah Secondary School is one of the pioneering schools to start a Floorball CCA and has participated in the annual Floorball National School Games (NSG) Championship since its inclusion in the Singapore Schools Sports Council (SSSC) Calendar. Besides honing our floor-ballers’ technical skills, the CCA aims to provide a structured training program to develop in our floor-ballers’ the school values of Respect, Integrity, Self-discipline and Empathy, and sportsmanship. We have experienced teachers and coaches to lead the CCA with the support of our enthusiastic alumni.  Our Floorball CCA provides students with ample opportunities to develop their physical abilities and put their skills into practice through friendly matches and competitions such as the NSG and Pesta Sukan Competition. One unique opportunity we offers to our floor-ballers is to compete in the Singapore Floorball League by joining the alumni teams coached by the school's experienced coaches. This allows them to develop their skills and passion to the next level.

Achieving Sporting Excellence through Basketball CCA

Bukit Merah Secondary School Basketball CCA is known for their success and excellence in local school tournaments. This is made possible with a passionate and hardworking team of basketball players, experienced and knowledgeable coaches and caring teachers. Under our coaches and teachers’ guidance, our basketball players developed their teamwork, communication skills and strategic play in the courts. Their agility, ball-handling skills, and fast-paced gameplay have made them a formidable opponent, never giving up even in challenging situations.

The team's dedication to character excellence and community involvement is also worth mentioning. They strive to develop holistically while simultaneously contributing to their community through organising local competitions such as the Whye Nam U14 Girls Basketball Tournament, BM U16 Boys & Girls Invitational Baskteball Championship. Our basketballers get the chance to plan and organise various external competitions under the guidance of coaches and teachers.  Our well-rounded approach sets them apart from others, moulding Merahan Basketballers to be self-directed and resilient athletes.

Reflections from Current and Ex-BMSS students

Navin s/o Kumaran (2018)

2018 – School Team Champion & National Champion

I was formerly from band in primary school and I wasn’t that vocal, confident and outspoken. After picking up floorball in secondary one, I started gaining confidence to be more vocal and outspoken. I was also offered the captain role in secondary 2 and this shaped me to become a leader who is vocal and driven to win matches. However, we didn’t have a good run in that season. In secondary 4, I got another shot at being the captain and I corrected myself on my previous mistakes I made as a captain. With floorball constantly boosting my confidence during the past 4 years, I became way more vocal, confident, resilient and self-disciplined this year.

Siti Nurhaliza Binte Khairul Anuar (2015)

2021 – Singapore National Floorball Player

2019 to 2020 – Played for Czech Republic's top-tier club SC Tempish Vitkovice

I am glad to have played for the BMSS Floorball Girls’ Team. Through the many sporting and academic challenges & achievements here in BMSS, I was able to use it to help me pursue a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences via the direct polytechnic admission programme (DPA) at Republic Polytechnic.

Mohamad Rashid Bin Jalaluddin (2008)

2023 – BMSS Boys Coach

2018 – Singapore National Floorball Player

Floorball has developed a 'never say die' attitude in me. The experiences of the numerous victories and failures throughout my floorball career has proven to me that if I pursue what I want to achieve and put in my maximum effort, the results will eventually show. It’s definitely a principle that stuck with me through my daily lives.

Floorball has also taught me to adapt to different situations and make quick decisions. Being a very tactical game, there are many instances where there is a need to change decisions on court to shift the game momentum to our advantage. Similarly in our daily lives not everything will go according to plan and there is a need to adapt or make changes. .

Nurul Shakira Bte Zainal (2019)

2016 to 2019 - Basketball Player

Through the Basketball CCA, I learnt that no matter how tough my opponents are, I must try my best not to give up until the end of the game. I learnt that communication, teamwork and self-awareness are important in a game because it sets the tone on both sides of the court and on how I want to push myself to play my best in the game.  These are important qualities to being a good basketball player.  I go by this motto and hope to inspire the future of BMSS Basketball players, “Be the best version of yourself in anything that you do”.

Leona Yoong (2018)

2018 - Basketball Girls’ Vice-Captain

I joined the Basketball CCA without really understanding what I was going to achieve. Being in the basketball CCA has nurtured me into a self-disciplined and responsible individual.  It taught me values that could be applied both on and off the court.  It made me understand the importance of teamwork, hard work and perseverance. Through these, it gave me a goal to work towards and to focus on.

I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to lead as the Vice-Captain of my team. The chance to lead and guide my team through the trainings and games has allowed me to become more self-directed and empathetic towards helping my peers and juniors in the game. The setbacks and experiences always made me self-reflect to correct my mistakes and overcome my shortcomings so that I would become a stronger and better player.  My achievements will not be possible if not for my teachers’ and coach’s dedication and guidence.

Adrian Then (2017)

2017 - Basketball Boys’ Vice-Captain

Discipline. Leadership. Teamwork. These are essentially the main 3 takeaways during my journey in the Basketball CCA.  All the blood, sweat and tears my teammates and I had gone through over the course of my 5 years in the school, enriched me with the best experiences that are precious to me.  From running laps around the court, to sweet twilight camp moments, I will not forget these memories. I am blessed with the most hardworking and caring teachers who constantly go the extra mile, just to see the smiles on our faces. Without these experiences I had in Basketball CCA, I definitely would not have become who I am today.

Nur Sarahfina Binte Kamarudin (2019)

2016 to 2019 – Floorball Player

2017 – Captain of the C Division Team

2019 – Captain of the B Division Team

I first learnt about floorball in BMSS and have been building my passion for this sport even until today. Floorball CCA has taught me the core values of resilience and self-discipline and I have kept these values throughout my floorball journey. I was appointed Captain in Secondary 2 and 4 and it has shaped me to be a role model for my teammates and cultivate my ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. Floorball has taught me to make quick and good decisions and adapt to different situations on court.

On days when my motivation is low, I remember why I started the sport and how the BMSS Floorball coaches and teachers have been supporting me in pursuing this sport from the day I picked up the stick. They are the reasons why I keep coming back to BM for training sessions. For me to build relationships and train with the future batches of Merahan Floorballers, and as a way to contribute back to my alma mater.

Nina Qareenah Binte Razalee (2021)

2018 to 2021 - Tchoukball Player

2021 - Captain of B Division Team

I am glad and felt honoured when my teacher-in-charge chose me to be the Captain of the C Division Team when I was in Secondary 1 as I knew that I can contribute to the CCA. I was happy that I could help my Tchoukball teammates and go through a lot of challenges with them. We had to go through vigorous training sessions but the friendships and bond forged during these sessions helped me get through each challenging time. I am proud to be a Tchoukball player because of the self-discipline and respect that I have learnt in my CCA. I am always grateful to my teammates and teachers for trusting me with their sincere heart.

Koh Wan Ting (2021)

2018 to 2021 - Tchoukball Player

2021 - Vice-Captain of B Division Team

I am sincerely honoured to be part of the Tchoukball CCA. I am always excited to attend CCA sessions as I can play games and train with my teammates and have an enjoyable time together. When I first started training in Tchoukball CCA, I found it tough and tiring to do the drills and exercises. However, as time passed by, I realised my stamina improved and I overcame the tiredness, I also became more resilient and self-disciplined. Given the opportunity to be the Vice-Captain was something I never expected. It gave me the chance to get to know my teammates better and learn how to work together with others. I really want to thank my teachers and coach for trusting me to lead the juniors and guide them.

Dian Tiara Binte Kamalruzaman (2023)
B Division Girls Captain 2023

Throughout my four years in BM Tchoukball CCA, I’ve forged many good friendships and created valuable memories. I am very grateful and honoured to be given the opportunity to be the captain. The teachers and coach in BM Tchoukball CCA have helped me learn the importance of resilience and communication. I was also fortunate enough to be able to participate in the World Youth Tchoukball Championship 2023 and managed to incorporate the values such as self-discipline and sportsmanship that I had learned from my CCA. Overall, I am very grateful for my teachers, coach and CCA mates in these meaningful four years.

Skylar Lam Shun Shen (2024)
B Division Boys Captain 2024

Bukit Merah Secondary School's Tchoukball boys’ team was recently founded in 2023. Players in this team learn the fundamentals of the sport, enhancing their knowledge and values while on the court. We were given the opportunity to participate in events, such as the ActiveSG x Tchoukball Association of Singapore Inter-School Games, where we competed against other schools. My experience with Tchoukball CCA has provided me with other opportunities to participate in larger-scale events, such as representing Singapore in the World Youth Tchoukball Championship (WYTC), which was also held in 2023. I personally learned the importance of quick thinking, teamwork, and the determination to go after every ball, which are essential mentalities for playing this sport, from my training in Bukit Merah Tchoukball CCA and my WYTC experiences and am grateful for the opportunities given.
