Concert Band 2020

The COVID-19 measures had modified our approach to our regular practices, with the implementation of virtual ones and safe management measures during physical sessions. Nonetheless, we were determined to pursue our musical aspirations and express our passion for music.

The opportunity to show case the efforts we had put in the past half a year was a rewarding experience and thus we were able to achieve the Accomplishment Award for the SYF Arts Presentation 2021 in both categories, that is, Flexible Band and Percussion Ensemble. We are proud of the band for their tenacity and perseverance in these new circumstances.

We would also like to express our gratitude towards our conductor Mr Wong Yew Hon, instructors, teachers-in-charge and our fellow members for their support in this journey.

Concert Band 2018 - 2019

The Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) Concert Band is indeed a band of brothers united in the common purpose of spreading their love of music and dedication to their craft.

We achieved Silver Award in the Singapore International Band Festival in 2018 and achieved Distinction Award in the Singapore Youth Festival (Arts Presentation) for both Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble in 2019.

We continue to strive to provide opportunities for our members to hone their aptitude in creating music and groom future-ready leaders to serve the school and the community. As always, the Best is Yet to Be!

Congratulations to the Concert Band for achieving a Certificate of Distinction at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2019!

In preparation for this, the 40-strong band rehearsed intensively at least three times a week from late last year, often scheduling extra practices to fine-tune their music. All of these were done in tandem with their regular studies, with the boys balancing their musicianship with their rigorous academic load.

Performing “Children of the Sun” by Roland Barrett for their choice piece and the set piece of “Festival on Earth” by Lee Jin Jun, the band did us proud with their excellent performance at the Singapore Conference Hall on the 17th April 2019.

The Concert Band would like to express their thanks to the school leaders, band conductors and their teachers-in-charge for their constant support throughout this challenging period, and on the day itself. They would also like to thank their subject teachers for their understanding, their parents for their love and care, and all who have contributed to this success.

The band may have been 40-strong on stage, but this achievement would not have been possible without the support of the whole school. To God be the Glory, for the Best Is Yet To Be!

Concert Band 2017

Year 2017, has been an exciting and challenging year for us as we had major events that needed us to push ourselves beyond our limits. In the recent Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2017, the main band managed to attain an Accomplishment Award. However, to many of us, we felt defeated that we were unable to attain a distinction that we were working towards but this has taught us a valuable lesson that it does not matter whether you have fallen back but whether you can pick yourself up from there. Our disappointment was overcome by the Percussion Ensemble as they had achieved Distinction Award. We are very proud of them as this year was the first year that our Percussion Ensemble participated in the SYF.

With a fresh mentality filled with determination, we managed to get back our focus on the upcoming task ahead of us, a fundraising concert. The Secondary 4 Band members had planned a fundraising concert, Symponia 2017 for the Alzheimer's Disease Association (ADA) for our Values-In-Action (VIA). Time was certainly not on our side as we rushed to prepare ourselves for the upcoming concert. The rehearsals leading up to the concert were intense and gruelling, but the values and lessons learned during our time in Band reminded us to keep pressing on despite the unfavourable situation and to never give up as difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations. Our efforts paid off as we were able to raise over $8000 and we were elated of what we were able to achieve not only as a Band but also for the school. We were extremely grateful for the school and to ADA for providing us an opportunity to give back to the community through music.

We hope that the juniors will be able to keep on pushing the band to greater heights through hard work and determination and leave behind a legacy that the school will be proud of while keeping in mind that ‘The Best Is Yet To Be’.
