As part of the school’s Student Leadership Development Programme, Values in Action (VIA) is a platform whereby students grow and develop into leaders who play an active role in improving the lives of others, and influencing and persuading others to serve the community. In BPGHS, we adopt the Service Learning approach in our ViA programme.
Service Learning combines service to the community with student learning in a way that improves both the student and community. There is an equal emphasis on helping communities and providing valid learning experiences to students.
Thus, Service-Learning is a structured approach that takes into consideration four areas:
i. engaging students in service that meets real community needs,
ii. identifying learning outcomes to link the students’ service experiences to the school curriculum,
iii. preparing students mentally and physically for the service tasks, and
iv. providing a structured process for students’ planning, organisation and reflection.
ViA opportunities are provided via the following platforms:
Under LEAPS system 2.0, students will be accorded ‘Service’ levels based on the following criteria:
* VIA projects must have a positive impact on the school or community and the duration of each project which includes planning, service and reflection, can be between 8 and 14 hours.
@ Student initiative ViA projects will involve the students championing a cause, gathering a group of like-minded people into the ViA project, planning, organising and executing it, facilitated by a Teacher Mentor.
