How did Singapore become a British Trading Post?
The British needed a port to support and protect their trade from India (their colony) and China.
The spice trade was lucrative and the British wanted a foothold in it.
The Dutch basically controlled most of the region. The British needed to find their own strategic location to compete.
The British only had Bencoolen and Penang at the time. Bencoolen was on the wrong side and Penang was too far north.
Singapore was a good choice as it a natural sheltered harbour, supply of drinking water, and a strategic location along the Melaka Straits.

Is Raffles the key founder of Singapore?
When Raffles and Farquhar left in 1823, John Crawfurd was appointed as Resident of Singapore. He laid the foundation of economic growth in Singapore.
