Welcome to the new normal.

Milestone 1: Entry Event

It has been...

since Malaysia first declared a movement control order.

Since then, the world has seen so much changes. School was closed for more than 3 months, students and teachers had to adapt to remote learning, traveling stopped and we saw how important it was to work together to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The last normal felt like so long ago. The last high-5, the last hug, the last hand shake...

Who would have thought that crowded landmarks all over the world would one day go through weeks and months of being deserted.

What does it mean to be in a Movement Control Order (MCO)?

On the 25th of January 2020, the first case of COVID-19 was detected in Malaysia. It was traced back to 3 Chinese nationals who previously had a close contact with an infected person in Singapore. They had travelled into Malaysia on the 24th of January 2020.

About 2 months later, a movement control order (MCO) was announced by Malaysia's Prime Minister, YB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. By then, more than 200 positive cases of COVID-19 has been reported.

Watch Malaysia's Prime Minister, YB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the first leg of MCO nationwide.

"Kerajaan memutuskan untuk melaksanakan perintah kawalan pergerakkan mulai 19 Mac 2020 iaitu lusa hingga 31 Mac 2020 di seluruh negara".

"The government has decided to implement a movement control order starting from 19th of March to 31st of March 2020 nationwide"

Malaysia was not the only country that announced a movement control order. Countries all over the world has either started a lockdown or followed through after us.

Think back to the time you first heard that Malaysia was going into a Movement Control Order.

Look at the questions below. Try and write down the answers to them in your own notebook as you reflect.

The MCO announcement was done during the school's holidays. Where were you when it was announced?

A MCO is a first time experience for most of us. What did you think it meant? Why did you think we had to do it?

Once the MCO took effect, you can no longer leave your home freely. How did you feel about that?

What was the biggest change that you and your family went through during MCO?

Adjusting our lives to the new normal.

The spread of COVID-19 virus have forced us to adjust our lives to a new normal.

Below are just a few phrases that has become common in our everyday lives.

"Don't touch your face"

"Wash your hands for 20 seconds"

Can you think of other phrases that has become common and "normal"?

Write it down in your notebook.

There are other parts of our lives that are also changing because of the virus. Look at all the pictures below. Click on the arrows to see the differences between life before COVID-19 and life after COVID-19.

What differences can you see? How does this make you feel? Why do you think you feel this way? Write down your thoughts in your notebook.

The outdoors.

Look at how the outdoors have changed. What are the biggest differences do you see? What about the outdoors do you miss the most?

Schools.

School used to be where students get to meet their friends, sit together at recess, and play sports. How have your school environment changed since it reopened?

Places of worship.

Places of worship is a place for people of the same religion to congregate and pray together. In the new normal, not everyone is as freely to go to a mass prayer anymore.

Tourist landmarks.

Travelling used to be something everyone looked forward to. So many new places to visit and explore. How has COVID-19 change this?

It has been more than 100 days since MCO was first announced. Life is starting to get back to how it was before.

However, we are still fighting the spread of COVID-19. The Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) is still in place. There are still so many restrictions to ensure the virus does not continue to spread. Life...feels different.

Read Juriah's reflections below.

Meet Juriah.

Just like you, Juriah had to stay home when MCO was announced. Juriah's pre-pandemic moment that she miss the most was her last high-5 to her best friend.

My last high 5.

A friend took this video of me and my best friend doing our daily clap routine on the last day of school before the school holidays. We used to do it almost every day at school. It was just for fun when we first created it. It made other people watch and laugh.

Now that we have to keep our distance in school, I really miss the simple routines we had even though it's something as silly as a high-5 clap routine. It feels...unreal that we can't even do something that used to be harmless. "No touching each other!" the teacher would remind us.

What do you miss the most about life before COVID-19?

Share with us your moments and what they mean to you today.
