About Mathematics (M)
Mathematics (M) is the successor of Mathematics (S) starting year 2012 when the new modular system for sixth-form study was implemented. The syllabus for Mathematics (S) which has been in use since the 2002 STPM examination was revised and replaced with the syllabus for Mathematics (M).
In this new system, a few changes have been made:
i. the total content is divided into three parts, one part for each term
ii. the written examination is carried out at the end of each term
iii. the assessment includes written examination and course work (School Based
Assessment)
iv. candidates are allowed to repeat the examination of each term to improve the results
STPM Mathematics (M)
Mathematics M is taken by Art stream students (optional). Basically, it is to fulfil the objective to enable students to acquire problem-solving skills and equip students with a foundational understanding of mathematical thinking and concepts before they proceed to related programmes for their tertiary level education.
Why STPM Mathematics (M)?
The Mathematics (M) syllabus is designed to provide a framework for a pre-university course that enables candidates to develop the understanding of mathematical concepts and mathematical thinking, and acquire skills in problem solving and the applications of mathematics related to social sciences and management. The assessment tools of this syllabus consist of written papers and coursework. Coursework offers opportunities for candidates to conduct mathematical investigation and mathematical modelling that enhance their understanding of mathematical processes and applications and provide a platform for them to develop soft skills.
Aims
The Mathematics (M) syllabus is designed to provide a framework for a pre-university course that enables candidates to develop the understanding of mathematical concepts and mathematical thinking, and acquire skills in problem solving and the applications of mathematics related to social sciences and management.
3 main reasons why you should include Maths as one of your subjects in STPM.
1. You enjoy and excel in Mathematics
Mathematics fascinates you and you find that Mathematics is easier to focus during the lessons by recognizing patterns, applying formulas and equations. You also did well in your SPM Mathematics and Additional Mathematics. Hence, it is quite natural for you to continue to study Mathematics because you get to dive deeper and wider into this subject.
2. You will have a strong foundation of Pre-University Mathematics
The latest Mathematics (M) syllabus is comprehensive. You will get to study 6 chapters each semester and you will be tested in terms of central assessments (written tests) and school-based assignments for coursework assessments.
In total, you will study 18 chapters which covering various topics in Calculus, Statistics, and Financial & Decision Mathematics. You will also be graded in terms of grade point average (GPA) every semester, which is similar to other Pre-University programmes.
3. You would want to have further study in a Mathematics-related field for your degree
As a Form 6 student, you would have noticed that most schools have already listed a combination of subjects according to Art/ Science streams to accommodate what students intend to study for their degree.
