This story is told from the perspective of Hammy the Hamster who lives with his family in South America. Hammy describes their daily lives, including foraging for food and playing after dark to avoid being caught. His pet cousins Lester, Larry and Lorain sent from the city, where they are well cared for but miss playing with Hammy and his family.
