Lesson Title: Words with /an/ and /am/

Learning Objective: Students will be able to accurately read words with the /an/ and /am/ sounds.

Instructional Video

In this video, students learn that the short vowel sound shifts when followed by the letter n or m.

Guided Notes

Traditional guided notes won't work for kindergarten; however, for specific students, I will provide blank pencil and paper or a white board and marker to draw or write to aid with learning. For most students, though, it can easily become a game and a distraction from paying attention to the instructional video.

Practice Work

This is a practice worksheet for short vowels. Sprinkled in the activity are /an/ and /am/ words.

In practice, I am looking to see how the student pronounces the word and, if initially incorrect, whether or not they can self-correct their miscue.

Mastery Check

In this mastery check, students must read and write words with /an/ + /am/.

The design for this mastery check requires an LMS (like Seesaw) where students can record their voices.

Progress Tracker

This is a teacher-facing progress tracker. I use it to know which students to pull for additional support and which to release additional lessons to on our LMS.

Since my units are long, it can be overwhelming for students to see how many lessons are in a unit. They see one assignment at a time, and the finished ones are filtered out so it’s not too visually overwhelming.
