I currently teach English 10, English Composition I, and English Composition II at Northeast Community School District in Goose Lake, Iowa.
Sitting outside on my porch in late May of 2020, I struggled to understand how the school year ended. In my nineteenth year of teaching, I knew there had to be a better way of teaching. Where did I turn? Google. Soon after, I landed on a lifesaver. The Modern Classrooms and the concept of self-paced blended learning were new to me.
How has my approach to blended instruction changed over time? Exponentially. Since May 2020, I have embraced the Modern Classrooms Model for all my classes. Later in 2020, I became a Distinguished Modern Classroom Educator. That spring, I completed the requirements to become a mentor, which has, in turn, helped me continue to grow as an educator.
One thing I love about MCP is the student ownership that happens. One student told me how our English class is less stressful than other classes because she can work at her own pace, and she feels like she has learned more because she has to show mastery of the learning standards. It's hard not to love this teaching model!
When not at school, you can find me walking my dog, Prince, and enjoying family time on the Mississippi River.
