Lesson Title: Gross Domestic Product: What is it and why should you care?
Learning Objective: Students will be able to understand what Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is, how it is calculated, and what it implies for countries around the world.
I use Screencastify to record my videos. I think about the five key points I want the students to take away from the lesson and center my notes around them.
This is a nine-minute video on GDP, what it is, and how we measure it. Everything green, the students know they have to copy down. Other items they may also write down, but they know the green font = mastery check material.
I have struggled in the past trying to talk about this in front of the class in a lecture setting, but I feel boiling it down to nine minutes is more effective as it keeps me from getting long-winded. This also maintains the students’ interest by incorporating a couple of embedded questions along the way. You can view those here in Screencastify.
I also use this YouTube video called "What the heck is GDP?" as supplemental instruction for my learners.
My notes are fairly short and to the point. Most lessons have five key points, and those key points can have up to 6 sentences of writing. All information in green font must be written down in the gray boxes.
The white boxes are for any other information the students may want to write down, including questions students may have after watching the video.
Students who have IEPs for notes or for skeleton notes will get these printed out. I rely heavily on the information in green when it comes to writing my mastery checks.
This practice has a cross-curricular connection with math, as students must divide with place values. They must understand that some countries have 1,000 million people, which is a billion (or more).
I also choose this practice because I want students to be able to recognize if their answer makes sense or if they are just going through the motions (i.e., does it make sense that the average person in France makes $453 or might I be leaving out some zeroes someplace?).
This mastery check is pretty straightforward. In it, I am looking to see if students understand the Must Do material (what was in green font from the instructional video).
I also use language from my video to ensure they are watching (Googling that may not give them the easy and quick answer they are hoping to find).
