Lesson Title: 06. The Workshop Model
Additional Details:
If you are new to MCP, it is important to know that my unit planner is something I developed for myself because I am neurodivergent and can miss important details if I have not accounted for them on paper. I love a good checklist! I know it looks overwhelming, but it helps keep me on track.
I intend to finish the whole unit within one week, and this unit will help me to identify students who might struggle with writing, technology, independence, peer collaboration, and reading so that I can begin to develop any support they will need as I tweak my Unit 1 for each area. I will also be able to identify students who can do excellent work at a quick pace so I can get to know them and plan aspirational projects according to their interests and strengths.
I use Screencastify videos with the Google Slides backdrop that I have built for the lessons. You can see all of them linked in the hyperlink board game, but I have pulled one out attached here.
I chose to record the lessons specifically because of how monotonous the beginning of this year felt for students, and I knew I wanted to get them learning from videos right away! You can find the link for each lesson inside the game board lesson itself.
I use the same slides I have for my lessons but delete the keywords and have the students fill them in. For this unit, I printed all of the slides and had them bound into a mini book so that the students could reference it later in the year if they wanted to.
My practices are different for each lesson, so I attached my planning form, which lays out the practice for each lesson.
Most of my practices are focused on getting the students to interact with their team and interact with the activities I use regularly in my class. My goal is for them, as they move into content, to know what to do without me having to teach protocols again.
I make my mastery checks and gameboard in Google Slides because I find it easy to navigate. When I print them, I print them two on a page so that I don’t waste paper, since I teach about conservation!
I have two versions of every mastery check for retakes. On the third attempt, it is always a one-on-one interview regardless of the subject.
The paper game board is glued into their notebook so that they don’t lose it and can track their progress separately from my whole-group progress tracker.
I loved the Auto-Updating Tracker from the first time I tried it. It is easy to use, duplicate, and navigate, and I appreciate the look of it.
My students love it when I put the tracker on the screen, and they can see their names have been moved forward on the lesson tab.
I use a paper copy of this tracker on a clipboard throughout the day and then transfer it to the computer and enter grades at the end of the day to save class time.
