HHP 3999: Adventure Tourism in Colombia

Classes will begin the first week in March, 2023, on the Part 2 term academic calendar schedule. Meetings will provide a background on Adventure Tourism and other forms of alternative tourism that benefit host communities with less negative impacts than mass tourism. Attention will also be given to cultural competence of the community we will travel through, as well as basic language and safety expectations. Details
Cost: $1999 for the course trip. This does NOT include the cost of airfare (currently about $400) to Cartagena, but it does include travel within Colombia and most meals. Students are encouraged to bring extra money for voluntary side trips and events, but those are not required.
Deposit: A deposit of $350 is due in order to register for the course. That deposit is non-refundable, unless you can find someone to take your place in the class before March 1, 2023. If the trip doesn't fill by Mid-January and the class has to be cancelled, you will be refunded this deposit. This can be paid through the ARC website here (be sure you are on the page for Spring 2023). Please contact Lisa-Ivester@utc.edu for details.

Gear & Equipment: Outdoor/travel gear can be acquired from UTC Outdoors or the HHP Dept for the duration of the trip. A full equipment list will be provided during course meetings.
Physical activity: This trip does require a 4-day backpacking trip to the Lost City (about 8 miles per day). Other excursions will be urban or beach-side.

Add your name to our list of interested students below. We'll reach out and help you get signed up.
Be sure your passport is up to date & expires no less than 6 months after our return from Colombia. Check other passport and vaccination requirements HERE.
All students are required to be vaccinated for COVID-19 to travel to Colombia.
Get on Duolingo. Basic Spanish phrases will help us engage with the community. We'll have local guides, but attempting to learn a little of the language is a sign of respect.
Go for a hike. We will all need to be in shape and able to help each other through the adventure.
