June/July 2025
Summertime!
As we wind down another academic year, I want to express my sincere appreciation to every arts educator who has sacrificed and given so much of themselves to support their students and their learning! Arts teachers shape and mold the leaders of tomorrow, giving them skills in communication, problem-solving and collaboration that are not so easily replicated in other curricular areas.
This has been a busy spring with an outstanding ine arts education week and conferences from the Missouri Art Education Association, as well as the annual meeting of the Missouri Dance Education Committee. We look forward to upcoming conferences for Missouri Bandmasters, Missouri Choral Directors and Missouri Fine Arts Academy.
We thank all who answered calls to action and celebrate the congressional repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) which restores full Social Security benefits for teachers and public servants. At the State level, $10.1M in funding for Missouri Arts Council was maintained and an increase in funding the Missouri Fine Arts Academy which will allow them to serve even more students in June of 2026. These victories are possible, thanks to the research of our legislative watch team and collaborative work with other Allied organizations.
Mark your calendars for Fine Arts Education Week 2026 - April 6-10. Our rotunda performance day will shift to Thursday, April 9 due to scheduling issues at the capitol building. We invite you to submit an application to be a part of this festive celebration of arts education in Missouri. You can join the Alliance’s work in other ways too! We are always seeking advisors, volunteers and those who will answer calls to action. Join the Alliance for free and stay informed!
As we approach this upcoming summer break, may I remind you of the importance of self-care. Being an arts educator can be exhausting! We wish for your well-being so you can continue to serve your students well. May each of you have a restful, safe, and rejuvenating vacation and we’ll see you again in August!
Phyllis Pasley
IN THIS ISSUE
As I write this, it is the end of the school year. As you read this, you are at the beginning of your summer adventures. What does summer mean to you? If you are an educator, it may mean a time to catch your breath and reflect on the past school year. Did you accomplish what you had hoped and what will the new school year look like? Maybe it means a slower pace and time to enjoy summertime activities. For many arts educators, it is a time to be immersed in professional learning conferences. Check out all the summer professional learning opportunities available statewide!
One Fine Nights Arts Festival at Republic High School in Republic MO
In May, I had the opportunity to attend the 20th Anniversary of Republic High School’s One Fine Night. Hundreds of pieces were displayed in the Main Hallways from all art students, featuring the Junior & Senior collections from Art Portfolio students. There were performances from the Jazz Band, Singers, Theater, RHS Alumni, and teachers. The event hosted a district-wide “Elementary Art Showcase” and the community voted for the People’s Choice award for each school. A new addition was the “Art Teacher Feature” where personal portfolios were on display from the Art Educators! It is always an inspiring event.

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?
We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.
The Missouri Alliance Arts Centered Education (ACE) program promotes and supports an arts across the curriculum approach to teaching and learning in Missouri's schools. This program enables schools to receive customized onsite professional development at no cost to the school.

MAAE's Arts Advocacy Efforts
Tap to learn more
MAAE engages in arts advocacy by providing information and support for local level advocacy, maintaining communication with our colleagues engaged in national level work, and with a variety of arts advocacy work at the state level. From raising visibility, to gathering information and training, much of our work in arts advocacy is at the state level. This includes our signature advocacy programs: Fine Arts Education Day, Senate Student Arts Exhibit, and the Show-Me Arts Summit. Other activities include reporting to our allies about the activities of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the State Board of Education, pending legislation, and changes to administrative rules. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.

As we wind down the school year and MAC’s fiscal year, I am looking forward to possibility. Possibility of connecting with more teachers, administrators, and school communities to emphasize the importance of the arts in education. To that end, I am hopeful that a few brave schools will take the leap into whole-school arts integration and apply for the A+ Schools Missouri training.
A+ Schools is a thirty-year-old school reform model that supports schools in four states. Missouri would like to be State Number Five.
FAQs
What is A+ Schools Missouri?
School reform model that implements the eight A+ Essentials, with arts every day at the center. Established A+ Schools in North Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas consistently report higher levels of engagement, attendance, and achievement for both students and their teachers.
How does it work?
Schools apply for acceptance into the A+ network. Highly trained A+ Fellows facilitate summer trainings [“summits”]. A+ Schools receive ongoing support beyond the training.
How much will it cost?
Missouri Arts Council proposes to fund 100% of training and support (roughly $90,000).
When does it begin?
Summer 2026
If you are curious, stop by a virtual information session this spring. Follow this link to our web page where you will find a registration form and updated details throughout May.
Cheers! Here’s to sunny skies.
