IN THIS ISSUE
In June the MAAE National Essay Winner, Hayden Hawkins, along with Melissa Cooper, MAAE Director of Public Policy, and Andrea Branstetter, Past Advocacy Coordinator enjoyed a whirlwind trip to Washington, DC.
We were able to meet with the advocacy staff from Americans for the Arts. In addition, we toured the White House, the US Capitol, and had a personal tour of the FBI experience. In addition to these events we were able to visit the National Archives, National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian, the Holocaust Museum, and Monuments by Moonlight.
On the last evening we were able to attend “Ramblin”, a premier performance of Appalachian Music, featuring The Red Clay Ramblers and Contemporary Dance through the Chamber Dance Project. The Chamber Dance Project is a not-for-profit organization brought to life by Diane Coburn Bruning, Artistic Director. This project provides a place for musicians and dancers to work, try out new material, compose new music, and new choreography during the off season. The artists can continue to work on their professional careers, while offering the DC area evening entertainment at an affordable price. If you are ever in DC look them up and remember to ask if it is a specific night. It was a white out night, unbeknownst to us, although we were welcomed. We had great seats and it was a wonderful experience for Hayden.
When I asked Hayden what his favorite part of the trip was, he answered “touring the White House.” Hayden enjoyed the trip and took a lot of pictures, enjoyed visiting the monuments, taking in all the inspirational quotes, and being able to see our country’s historical documents. It was an inspiring trip, and Hayden was an excellent representation of how the arts help to mold our future generations. We wish him well as he begins his college journey at Mizzou in Political Science.
MAAE's Dr. Cynthia Williams Phelps and Lauren Hanahan attended the two day event covering arts integration.
Dr. Cynthia Williams Phelps and I participated in the KS/MO Arts Integration Conference in Liberty, MO. This immersive two-day professional development experience provided us with valuable insights and connections with practitioners and teacher leaders. It reminded us of the importance of promoting Arts Integration among Missouri educators.
The conference was a treasure trove of knowledge, offering us new strategies for teaching creative movement to young learners, leveraging improv to foster a sense of community in the classroom, using comics to explore cause and effect, and employing puppets to enhance fine motor and gross motor skills while nurturing social and emotional learning.
The conference's learnings have greatly enriched our approach to Arts Integration. We are now equipped with diverse strategies and ideas that will enable us to engage and educate educators more effectively and meaningfully, all while emphasizing the value of integrating the arts into the curriculum.
MAAE sponsored several participants to attend this conference and learn alongside us. One teacher who engaged in our ACE program during the 2023-2024 school year has participated in this event for the first time and joined the KC/MO Partners in Education Teacher Leader program. The tools she will be able to bring back and share with her cohort in Springfield, MO, will help us continue supporting them as an ACE school and provide her additional leadership skills and tools to raise awareness and support others in her building.
Additionally, we sponsored a beatboxing teaching artist, who was able to use his time at this symposium to learn methods of being a teaching artist, the importance of scaffolding and flow in a lesson, and most importantly, spending time with fellow educators learning about their needs in the classroom setting.
Armed with these new insights and our ability to promote MAAE, the ACE program, and MAIN events, we are excited to enhance our upcoming workshop sessions. Our goal is to create a vibrant learning experience for workshop participants and spread awareness of the benefits of Arts Integration among educators throughout Missouri. We are optimistic about the potential of these strategies to enhance the learning experience for our students and the future of Arts Integration in Missouri.
Summer is one of my favorite seasons of the year. I love the different pace that summer presents and spending time in my comfort zone with family and friends. As educators, we need time away from the classroom, to relax in our comfort zones, where stress is low and familiarity is present. I hope you found time this summer to relax, reflect, and refresh. Between summer travels, I had the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone through Arts Integration workshops and symposiums. Although I am an Arts Integration specialist, I am also primarily a music educator/music teacher educator. It is important for my own professional growth to learn new ways to explore learning in the context of other content areas and art forms.

The Springfield Regional Arts Integration Conference was held July 11-12 at Kickapoo High School in Springfield MO. This two-day event is a partnership between Springfield Public Schools (SPS) and the Springfield Regional Arts Council (SRAC). Featuring arts educators from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Focus 5, this conference focused on Arts Integration techniques in Science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Reading, and applications for classroom management strategies through the art forms of Dance, Music, Storytelling, and Digital Arts. It was sponsored by the Springfield Regional Arts Council, Artworks, Rural Schools Partnership, Springfield Public Schools, and Missouri Arts Council.
I traveled with our exhibit booth to the Missouri Bandmasters Association at Margaritaville and Missouri Choral Directors. I always enjoy the opportunity to connect with music educators across the state and share the variety of ways Missouri Alliance can support their programs!
Missouri Fine Arts Academy
In June, I had the opportunity to visit with Dr. Fatih Benzer and students at the Missouri Fine Arts Academy on the campus of Missouri State University. I shared information about our advocacy work, Fine Arts Education Week, as well as the Senate Student Fine Arts Exhibit. I also attended the afternoon assembly and enjoyed watching several performances by academy attendees.
Dr. Benzer shared that MFAA received the highest number of applications compared to the previous years. They accepted 100 students out of 215 applicants they hosted in “Wood Hall” on Missouri State University campus in Springfield, MO. Students took courses in “Ellis Hall,” “Craig Hall,” and “the Brick City” on Missouri State University campus. The 2024 MFAA theme was “Transform” because of the ability of art to transform our perception of the world by stimulating our imagination and exposing us to new possibilities.
Read more from Lauren Hanahan, Arts Integration Specialist, about the KS/MO Kennedy Center Partners in Education Arts Integration Symposium we attended July 16-17, 2024 in Liberty MO.
Through 2023-2024, Missouri Alliance collaborated with the KS/MO Partners in Education program to support funding for Missouri teachers to participate in many rich, experiential learning opportunities to grow their Arts Integration toolbox. Many teachers started in July of 2023 at the Arts Integration Symposium, then spent the year continuing their Arts Integration journey as Teacher Leaders in their buildings. As part of that process, they completed online seminars, participated in in-person workshops to build their skills, worked 1:1 with Focus 5 Teaching Artists, and then reflected and shared their experiences with other educators across the state. Many of these teachers chose to participate in our final MAIN Event of the 2023-2024 year. Jennifer Short, Dana Ross, Carolyn Fulk, Grace LaRose, and Stephanie Cohen all shared their learning experiences. MAAE will continue to support this professional development for Teacher Leaders through 2024-2025!
As you plan for the Fall, please consider joining our online professional learning networks and ask about our Arts Centered Education program.
Join us for an exciting new Professional Learning Season 2024-2025 beginning August 5 with IDEA (Inclusion Diversity and Equity in the Arts) and September with MAIN (Missouri Arts Integration Network). Be sure to Save the Dates and watch for more detailed information!

Tiny Toy Tales: Deepening Literacy Through Storytelling
Bite-Sized Arts Integration PD
Tiny Toy Tales: Deepening Literacy Through Storytelling
Presented by Kassie Misiewicz of Focus 5
A Tiny Toy Tale is an engaging, effective literacy strategy which involves students in storytelling. As the tale unfolds, tiny toys appear representing key elements, such as characters, setting, and objects. The toys reinforce key vocabulary and create a visual map of the story, which aids in students' understanding of story elements, structure, and sequence. Facial expressions, gestures, character voices, repetitive phrases, and props stimulate and deepen comprehension and retention of the story.
Why Storytelling? It is a foundation of thoughtful literacy programs. It builds background knowledge in any subject area. Storytelling expands vocabulary, helps to demonstrate fluency and shows function of tone, intensity, pacing, and mood. It helps to create a literary community, expands literary knowledge (characters, setting, problem/solution, theme), increases oral communication skills especially when listeners become tellers, and stimulates the use of the imagination and imagery.
When to use the Strategy
To Introduce Content
To Build Background Knowledge
To Deepen Understandings
To Assess Understanding

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?
We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

MAAE engages in arts advocacy by providing information and support for local level advocacy, maintaining communication with our colleagues engaged in national level work, and with a variety of arts advocacy work at the state level. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.

The Marshall Community Chorus, located in Marshall, Missouri is launching a new Composer Residency Project. The goal of the project is to bring living, nationally known choral composers to Marshall for a mini-residency in conjunction with one of our concerts. Representative music of the composer will be performed at the concert on the last day of the residency. The composer will have an opportunity to work with the choir, to engage audience members through a "Conversation with the Composer" opportunity before the concert, and to make several school visits to share information about the art of composing, to encourage musical endeavors in the youth, and to encourage music as a source of lifelong participation and pleasure.
This project will allow hundreds of rural youth an opportunity they would never have otherwise. It will also provide the same rare opportunity for the choir and audience members.
