Arts Across the Curriculum Full Committee Meeting
Change in day and time: Monday, August 26 @ 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Beginning in September, our MAIN professional development workshops will take a deeper dive into "Why Arts Integration?" from the perspective of college instructors, teachers, students, and administrators. Be sure to join the conversation and register for the upcoming sessions.
In May, we hosted an end of the year wrap-up with the Shook Elementary cohort in Marshfield, MO and our teaching artist, Rachel Jamieson. We reflected on what had worked well and our next steps for the new school year beginning August. They would like to continue their partnership with Missouri Alliance through our ACE program.
What have we done already this summer?
This summer, we have established a promising connection with Billy Gosnell, the new administrator at Jarrett Middle School in Springfield, MO. Last year, we collaborated with the entire staff and individual teachers, who were inspired to delve deeper into Arts Integration. With the change in leadership, we were concerned about the continuity of our Arts Integration initiatives at Jarrett. However, after meeting with Billy, we are delighted to share that he is not only enthusiastic but also committed to furthering Arts Integration practices among his educators. This ensures the continuation of our partnership in the 2024-2025 school year, providing a stable platform for our Arts Integration program.
Additionally, we are building a three-part symposium with Hazelwood School District K-12 Music and Art Educators. We are working alongside the district to provide four sessions with highly trained teaching artists focusing on content-specific instruction and introductions to Arts Integration practices with their core content in mind. We are thrilled to share this work with more practitioners and hope to use this opportunity to support individual teachers and schools in their Arts Integration exploration.
This year, MAAE collaborated with the KS/MO Partners in Education program to support funding for Missouri teachers to participate in many rich, experiential learning opportunities to grow their Arts Integration toolbox. Many teachers started in July of 2023 at the Arts Integration Symposium, then spent the year continuing their Arts Integration journey as Teacher Leaders in their buildings. As part of that process, they completed online seminars, participated in in-person workshops to build their skills, worked 1:1 with Focus 5 Teaching Artists, and then reflected and shared their experiences with other educators across the state. Many of these teachers chose to participate in our final MAIN Event of the 2023-2024 year. Jennifer Short, Dana Ross, Carolyn Fulk, Grace LaRose, and Stephanie Cohen all shared their learning experiences.
For the 2024-2025 year, we are already supporting many new teachers to start their Arts Integration journey at this year’s Arts Integration Symposium in July. Some of these are returning Teacher Leaders, continuing their learning and supporting those in their buildings to join in, while others are new to the Arts Integration realm and will be experiencing this journey for the first time. We are also able to use funds to support a Teaching Artist from Kansas City, who will be a big asset to our ACE program during the 2024-2025 school year.
Once again, we look forward to the summer Arts Integration Symposiums offered through KS/MO Kennedy Center Partners in Education, as well the Springfield Regional Arts Council.
The KS/MO Partnership symposium will be held July 16 & 17.
Springfield Regional Arts Integration Conference attendees will discover foundational arts concepts, teaching strategies, and curricular connections in engaging sessions that dive into music, dance, theater, visual arts, and more. Participatory workshops will make arts integration accessible for everyone and demonstrate how this method can enhance any educator's approach to teaching. This conference is appropriate for teachers, principals, school district administrators, and partnering arts organization staff and teaching artists.
