Author Study-Arthur Conan Doyle

Sociology

Sociology is the study of human interaction. It focuses on people as well as studying trends, cultural changes, human development, social institutions, and collective behavior. Sociology enhances students’ understanding of the world and considers how we might address societal concerns. A sociological perspective underscores the importance of examining the world with a critical eye and to question assumptions and generalizations about the world.
African American Studies

African American Studies centers the history, culture, and contributions of people of African descent to the American identity. There will be significant emphasis on analyzing sources to understand the overlooked contributions to American economic activities, social structures, religious beliefs, cultural achievements, and technological innovations. Class discussions will stress identity, multiple perspectives, history, migration, immigration, systems of power, race relations, social movements, and equity as major elements of African American Studies.

This course will produce the Math and Science Academy school yearbook. Students in this course are tasked with producing a timeless, creative, all-encompassing, and innovative publication which will record our school’s community, memories, and events. In this course, students will gain skills in the following areas: cover design, page design, publishing techniques, copywriting, editing, photography, record keeping, time management, teamwork, marketing, and leadership skills. Students will use various computer programs to complete the various yearbook creation tasks as well as Lifetouch’s yearbook design program.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science is a hands-on course where students explore how Earth’s systems work and how living and nonliving parts of the planet interact. The course combines biology, chemistry, and Earth science to examine a variety of topics, blending ideas about how science connects to society and decision-making while focusing on understanding the science behind environmental systems and changes.
In this course, students study ecosystems, biodiversity, energy flow, and cycles of matter, and use real data, models, and investigations to understand environmental change at local and global scales. The course also includes topics such as climate change, pollution, water and energy resources, and renewable energy. Students analyze human impacts on the environment, explore possible solutions, and use scientific evidence to explain and evaluate real-world environmental problems.
