It is time to start conditioning- everyone (all events) should try to jog 3-4x a week - building up by adding a few minutes everyday. Be up to 4-5x week by the end of Spring Break. Those just starting- try to build to 15 minutes of not stopping by spring break. Experienced should try for 20/25 mins. especially if you are 800/1500. Always stretch large muscles before and after. Finish all runs with 6x100m strides. Strides are a nice jog at 60-70% effort concentrating on good knee lift, arm swing, upright position, head forward, shoulders relaxed. If you know drills- do them 3x week. A drill, high knees, butt kicks, lunges, single butt kicks.
PLEASE keep safety in mind when jogging outside of school practice
Do NOT run on high traffic roads
Softer surfaces are better than concrete to avoid shin splints.
When you run on any road- you run facing the traffic- so you can see the vehicle coming. No headphones/ear buds.
Mills Riverside is a great choice. Griswold/Snowflake/Ross is a good choice. Jericho East.
Starbird Road is an 800m loop. Path around JES. BRMS perimeter if it's dry. MMU track.
Do NOT run alone- have a friend/family member run/bike with you.
PLEASE wear appropriate footwear- running shoes. This will help avoid injuries (shin splints/ankles). Look at the soles of your current sneakers- if worn down-please purchase a new pair.
