Introduction
For the 2022-2023 school year, the field study courses in the new teacher education curriculum will be implemented. It is the goal of these courses to provide students with "practical learning experiences" in which they can "observe, verify, reflect on, and experience the various components of the teaching-learning process in actual school settings" (Commission on Higher Education, 2004).
The CHED Memo Order (CMO) 30 s. 2004 guided all TEIs until the publication of CMO 74 to 80 and 82 s. 2017. It has thus been decided that all curricula have been redesigned, but preservice teachers still need to take a few professional education courses before their internship or student teaching.
To ensure the health, safety, and security of teachers, students, and pre-service teachers, as well as other stakeholders, during the pandemic, a joint CHED-DepEd Memo Order titled "New Normal Policies and Guidelines on the Deployment of Pre-Service Teachers for Field Study and Teaching Internship for AY 2020-2021" was issued.
Experiential, developmental, and aligned with the Most Essential Learning Competencies are all features of Field Study that are highlighted in this order of importance (MELCs).
As a training ground for pre-service teachers, the College of Teacher Education at Mariano Marcos State University maintains a number of Laboratory Schools (LS). Students in the LS are taught using a mVLE as a common platform for both teaching and learning. A variety of considerations and concerns raised by various stakeholders are taken into account when conducting pedagogical operations such as synchronous and asynchronous online instruction.
The Center for Excellence in Teacher Education's noble mission of nurturing preservice teachers through optimal experiential and developmental learning must continue despite the pandemic.
This is the first experiential course, which will immerse a future teacher to actual classroom situation and learning environment where direct observation of teaching learning episodes that focuses on the application of educational theories learned in content and pedagogy courses will be made. Observations on learner’s behavior motivation, teacher’s strategies of teaching, classroom management, and assessment in learning among others shall be given emphasis. Likewise, this course is designed to help FS students in validating the diversity among learners in the actual learning environment. It will require them to recognize feasible approaches to facilitate learning considering the learner’s different phases of development and social environment. A portfolio shall be required in the course.
This course is a continuation of Field Study 1. It is school based and allows a preservice student to participate and assist in a limited actual teaching-learning activities that relate to assessment of learning, preparation of instructional materials, preparation of bulletin boards and other routines in the classroom. A portfolio which will contain sample lesson or learning plans and demonstration teaching of at least one subject content area will be required. Action research shall be encouraged to start in this course and conclude during the internship.
