Goals For This Equitable Creative Coding Resource
This resource was made possible through MMSA's participation in The Scratch Education Collaborative (SEC).
From Scratch - "The Scratch Education Collaborative (SEC) is an initiative that supports and engages participating organizations from around the world in a two-year, collaborative cohort experience to strengthen their organization’s commitment to, and implementation of, equitable creative computing. SEC participants engage in a series of collaborative learning experiences that are co-developed and co-facilitated by Scratch and SEC partner organizations as they work to create a self-sustaining community of practice and establish models for equity-centered creative computing resources."
Utilizing UDL, CT, and Math practices, taking a strengths based approach to integrating computational thinking can support and engage all learners in developing mathmatical fluency.
Scratch can feel overwhelming to start - building an educator's proficiency and skills in using Scratch increases the likelihood of using the platform to integrate and hopefully generates ideas for curricular connections.
There are lots of ways creators and educators can used Scratch as well as a multitude of resources on using the platform. Hopefully, this resource will point you to resources that will inspire you and help with your Scratch integration jounrey.
The Scratch Foundation provides multiple resources to get started coding in Scratch:
Activity Guides walk you through specific activities such as 'Make a Chase Game', 'Create a Story', or 'Make Music'. These Activity Guides also provide associated coding cards, video tutorials, and Educator Guides.
Scratch Coding Cards provide step-by-step instructions on functions such as 'Glide from Here to There', 'Adding Sounds', and 'Start a Story' in addition to many others in a scrollable pdf form.
With Starter Projects, you can play and remix them to make your own creations.
