Numeracy in Nature

Explore lessons, routines, activities, and educator stories that highlight how the outdoors provides meaningful opportunities for children to engage in mathematical thinking through observing patterns, counting, measuring, estimating, comparing, and problem-solving in authentic contexts. 

Many of the materials on this site were developed, adapted, and refined through MMSA’s Numeracy in Nature project and our Building Strong Foundations project, which was funded by the Maine Department of Education's Early Numeracy Initiative. Together, these initiatives have supported educators across Maine in creating engaging, real-world learning experiences that help children build strong numeracy skills while connecting with the world around them.
