Numeracy in Nature connects learning to real experiences, making mathematics meaningful, engaging, and relevant.
Explore lessons, routines, activities, educator stories, and practical ideas that highlight how the outdoors offers countless opportunities for children to apply mathematical thinking in authentic ways. The resources on this site showcase that through observing patterns, counting, measuring, estimating, comparing, and problem-solving in natural settings, children build numeracy skills while engaging with the world around them.
In 2021 and 2022, the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) partnered with educators across Maine to explore effective ways to integrate mathematics learning into outdoor settings through the Numeracy in Nature project. Through this initiative, K–5 educators collaborated to develop, adapt, and implement resources shared on this site. Numeracy in Nature has grown over the years, and the resources created by participants continue to engage students in mathematical learning.
Most recently, MMSA partnered with the Maine Department of Education on the Early Numeracy Initiative, Building Strong Foundations. Through this project, more than 80 educators from across Maine participated in professional learning and coaching and hosted community engagement events focused on early numeracy. Resources developed and refined through this initiative are available in our resource bank.
MMSA offers a Numeracy in Nature professional development workshop series for schools and districts through our math consulting services. This package explores meaningful strategies for taking math learning outdoors, as educators work together to create and use Numeracy in Nature resources.
